Capturing magma creatures...
« on: October 22, 2010, 07:18:56 am »

Well the good news is my new arena is almost up and running! I have plently of goblin prisoners gladiators who have been forced to voluteered to take part in the arena games, but the only problem is...I don't have enough animals to fight the goblins. I have a few monkeys and wolves but thats hardly fair! I need something that can give a bigger fight...Something like...MAGMA CREATURES!!

Normally we don't want magma creatures anywhere in our fort, but I want to capture some. But I don't know how i can capture them...And then retrieve them, as they will most likely be in a lot of magma.

Any ideas?

They used to come say hello quite often in 40d but in .16 I haven't had a single one be a problem or come close to my dorfs. in .12 one cow fought off a fireman though.

I think dumping stuff into magma and putting animals on a leash and maybe setting up chairs might cause noise to wake something up from the deeps?
Or, at least I think it should, even if it doesnt.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

The only idea that I have is to have a magma area off my fort, and have it opened up with a cage trap or two with a animal as bait...but i dunno. I'm pretty low on creatures at the moment.

Magma creatures don't regenerate as far as I know (they have to access the map in magma, and at the same time, can't), so you can't catch more than there are on the map at embark.
But if you do want to catch that Magma Crab, just flood one or two magma-safe cage traps with LOTS of magma (preferably tapped right next to the crab and funneled out of the map) and drain after the catch. I don't think there is a better way.

Enticing Fire- and Magmamen works the same as with other hostile creatures: Get a dwarf in their line of sight (horizontal or vertical) and they give chase. Not sure if Magma Crabs behave like that though.

Magma crabs will start walking perpendicularly to the line of sight. I guess that mean they give chase.
