Earlier today I had some great fun with Third Age. Notably I had this one battle where the chief of the Misty Mountains attempted to reinforce a small army that I attacked as Silvans. Had hundreds of archers on a cliff overlooking the narrow pass they had to move through, with infantry blocking the entrance to the cliff. There was a line a mile long of solid corpses all throughout the pass, some 3000 orcs, including their faction leader, and about 200 elves dead. That same turn I attacked Moria with that army, but I released the Balrog (Which is represented retardedly, really, 10 soldiers about the size of trolls but much tougher which look kind of like Balrogs but not really. If they can make Mumakil 100 feet tall why not make a single terrifying Balrog of death, preferably with AOE attacks that do friendly fire) and had my entire army vanquished.

[rant]Unrealisitically, XVIII century Poland turned out to be a really strong faction in Empire.  :P If there is ever a historial accuracy mod a la EB for the game it should portrait that getting ANY reforms or taxations in the Landowner Democracy, the political system of the time, was impossible. The commonwealths downfall should be near inevitable(with aggaersion from outside powers). I think it would still make for an awesome campaign. Instead of conquering your goal would be to remain in existance. The streangth of armies you possess should depend on senate decrees and the will of the upper classes to take up arms. The elected king could even be a member or ruler of another faction, forcing you to go join in on his wars :P .
This is really why I can't wait for Magna Mundi the Game to come out, nothing is more entertaining  then struggling to survive as a completely messed up country.

I'm currently on a break from Rome: Total War(been playing XGM for too long time so I'm kind of tired of phalanxes and cohorts for now)

I'm currently playing M2TW mod Clouds Across Europe(VH/VH) and I've got to say that it looks pretty interesting so far while I'm waiting for Rise of the Caliphate and more importantly Wrath of the Norsemen to be finished. I'm playing now as the Khwarezm Shah(mostly iranians) and the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Khwarezm seems very interesting since their main strength is cavalry and their heavy infantry is lacking and it's distinctly different from my usual army setups which usually focus on heavy infantry with spears/pikes and crossbows for support. Also, the sieges will probably be more challenging(which is a good thing since the A.I is pretty helpless when attacking castles).

I've only ever managed significant success in M2TW, and even then only as England, Spain, or the HRE. I love the missile troops Spain has though. 3 units of jinetes and almughuavars will see me to many a great victory.

I actually feel that I was beaten by the AI as Ottomans in Darthmod. I made the mistake of investing too much into poor provinces that won't pay back quickly. As a result I don't have enougth funds to maintain an army capable of bouncing off al the full stacks that Russia and Austria keep sending. Also Persia took advantage of my weakened eastern border and took Armenia by storm with a THIRD full stack. Considering all my armies in the whole empire add up to maybe 1 stack, the fact that early ottoman troops are subpar(accept for camels - they rule) and the final blow which was losing my whole flee to the Morrocans I've decided to restart. This time I'll concentrate less on trading and growing the lame balkan provinces and more on keeping a money reserve to keep my armies kicking.

Rome is my favorite, I also own Medieval 2. Have the expansion packs for both.

I love playing humans in Rome. Battles make great storytelling fodder.

Like the time I beat my friend (also a RTW fan) in a skirmish, I had a nice balanced Roman army, he had a crapton of Spartan hoplites, cretan archers and catapults. He had the high ground, and his spartans (like 12 units) were forming a protective semicircle with their spears bristling out at me while the archers and catapults rained hot death on my troops (some urban cohorts, 1/2 roman 1/2 praetorian cavalry, some archer auxilia and incendiary pigs)

I won due to a series of cavalry raids around his entire spartan line to take out his archers and catapults, and the patience to wait for his spartans to come to me.

Even so, it was down to the last man, I think I only had 14 individuals fighting at the end when the last of his spartans finally routed. A real Pyrrhic victory. :P

After playing Empire Total way I have to say. I entirely missed the whole royal family bit.

It just wasn't fun needing to buy my generals for an obscene amount of cash.

I love playing humans in Rome.

You can play a race other than humans?

There's an implied "against" in between "playing" and "humans", meaning against another player, rather than the computer. At least that's how it reads to me.

It's interesting how many different playstyles there are.  I've always had the most success with Venice and Hungary.  I'm not entirely sure why, because I despise my own cavalry and missile cavalry especially, but that's the game's fault for having such awful pathfinding.  I guess the native terrain just works well with Hungary's mounted troops.  And Bulgarian Brigands.

I've had the most success with the HRE and Portugal, myself. Portugal might seem a bit odd, but I soundly defeated spain and drove the moors back to timbuktu, while sending a token crusader army across north africa, though I knew someone else would beat me to the target the crusader army bonuses were a nice way to soundly slaughter everything I ran across. Then my laptop's keyboard (and touchpad) stopped responding, and I had to have it sent in for maintenance (and would again, several months later, and again, ultimately getting a new laptop under warranty; apparently the port the keyboard and touchpad plugged into wasn't secure, so they'd come unplugged every now and then (idiotically: they were replacing the entire keyboard and touchpad every time it was sent in for maintenance; when they were replacing the whole laptop the tech opened it for cleaning, unplugging them in the process, and it worked just fine when he put it back together ::))) and I lost the save. :-\

In vanilla, I've had the most success with Spain. That was likely because of Jinette spam though. The funny thing is that the Javelins only do a tenth of the damage dealt, the huge melee charge pretty much routs all their militia spearmen and stuff. Then I send my 3 heavy cav backups around to rout any remaining units. I luffed playing Norway in stainless steel. Axes for the win.

Well when you can weaken an enemy with very fast units that NEVER tire who still manage to have a powerful charge with stats that can carry them into the end game.

yeah they tend to do well.

Honestly they are like an end game unit you get right from the start.

I recently got Napoleon, and I've managed to lose, lose, and lose some more. I'm not very good at this game.

Its why I like playing against human players. They don't stand for that shit and charge horses at the bastards.

I hear you there. As the HRE I always seem to hit a wall when heading westward, where it seems like the terrain finally gives the French enough edge to start repulsing me.
