Pump dat watter!
« on: October 21, 2010, 07:27:37 pm »

Ok, I'm at the point where i need to build my first pump. I need to empty a cave I found. So how exactly do I go about building it. I have pipes and a corkscrew thing...how do i put it all together into a pump?

Where do I put the screw in relation to the water?

The wiki explains it better than I ever could in a single, brief, forum post.

I need to empty a cave I found.

If the water in the cave touches the edge anywhere you will not be able to empty the water out of that cave without some serious engineering to block the inflow (magma casting or collapsing walls across the openings).

The bad news is that this requires some engineering. The good news is that you get to engineer something!

Or just building a wall.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

You can't construct in water and if there's an outside source, the water will never really get below 7/7. Building a wall above the water and letting it fall won't help, because constructions deconstruct upon cave ins.

Which is why someone (gtmattz) said you have to collapse a wall. He just left off it would have to be a NATURAL cave in--- that is, dropping undug ground from a z-level above down.

Details for doing that can be found in the wiki under "Breaching an Aquifier" under Aquifier, IIRC. It's the same thing technique, just a different "shape" needed for what you drop.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!
