Dwarves that like to run into combat.
« on: October 21, 2010, 04:14:29 pm »

Alright, I seem to have run into a problem. Everytime I get a seige, and I get a fair number from the Fortress Defense mod and the Orc mod, dwarves like to run outside and spam me with job cancels and OH GOD THAT ORC IS RIPPING ME IN HALF. Can I stop this suicidal run to their deaths? I mean, yes, its funny as hell, but it does make cleaning them up once they are reducec to little more than lumpy red paste by trolls. And due to most of them running out, the population is getting low. Please, someone help me not have too much fun this early.

Use burrows and alerts?

Place doors/retractable bridge with pit at entrance and close them after getting military out?

How do I do that? Once assigned to a burrow dont dwarves never leave it?

Edit: I forgot, I already have a retractable bridge thats about 20x5. Every time I go to retract it, dwarves either get stuck outside, or a random animal falls 20 floors and dies in my maze.

Also.....being a fellow fortress defense player i can say that you should let the seiges die up close if you plan on looting corpses....your haulers will almost always be ambushed in their mad sprint across the map to recover a crappy bit of armor you cant wear anyway.  If it dies far away and you really must have it (traders caravan)then sweep with the troops first.

Useful tricks.
Burrows, like the guy above said, define a burrow inside the walls covering all z levels, first sign of hostiles you stick the civilian alert up with this burrow assigned, every civvie outside the walls should make a run for home.  you dont assign the dwarves directly to the burrow, use the alerts

ordering dwarves to stop gathering refuse from outside can help too, otherwise theyll spend all year fetching severed limbs back to your refuse piles (though burrows stops this)

Edit: to use the burrow with alerts go to (m)ilitary, (a)lerts.  move right twice from your inactive alert (the default top one which i assume you dont otherwise use) and hit enter over your newly designated burrow to assign it to the alert.  Now whenever you move the civilian alert to inactive they all get restricted to the burrow, to lift it put civie alert back to Active/Training

Whenever a siege (or even an ambush) is triggered, you just go to (m)ilitary (a)lerts, and set the civilians into "Active/Training" alert (down and enter), then assign that alert to a civvie burrow (right, right, enter).

Siege over? So into (m)(a) again, set the civvies into "Inactive" alert.

Do I need to put the civies into a squad first?

No. If you check the (m)ilitary (a)lerts screen, you'll see stuff like "Set civilian alert" and "Civilian alert: Inactive". That alert is applied to every dorf not in an active squad. Which means that they'll stay in the burrow assigned to that alert.

Oh, sweet. Thank you very much. Now I just need to get my entire 6 man medical team to start fixing up the dwarf who just got nearly torn limb from limb. Thankfully he was just a low skill military dwarf, but still....that guy killed 4 naga. I need to save him.

nothing ever really prevents the odd dwarf doin his kamikaze thing.  I just had my militia commander whos in half spoiler/ half steel plate rush off ahead of his squad.....warwolf axe lord took both his legs..im kinda disappointed.

Just as a heads up for when you encounter this too, seems to happen when they briefly catch sight of something but the rest of the squad dont...gotta be fast to send in backup since no amount of station orders will cause dwarves to retreat
