« on: October 21, 2010, 04:00:11 pm »

OK, i create a room in which to put the farm. Then i make a plot to grow the plants. When i query the farm however, i cannot grow my plump helmet spawns. I am underground and I do have the spawns. Please help.

31.x requires mud in order to grow stuff underground. Try looking for "Irrigation" in the DF wiki, or the "How to Farm" sticky in this very forum.

Check it out...

The VERY FIRST THREAD in this section of the forum is titled: How To Farm in 0.31.x (DF2010).

If you had bothered to simply look in there, all your questions would have been answered.

i had, however, i needed a simpler explanation and previous attempts to irrigate in that manner had turned to disaster.

I've taken to choosing embarks with nice brooks/rivers nearby that freeze in the winter. While the water's frozen, I mine to the brook/river and put up a floodgate. Then I can lever-rig the floodgate, wall off my farmland-to-be, and issue a controlled flood at my leisure.

I'm working on a draining system so I can also use it as a drowning trap for "a vile force of darkness" when they come. Then I can harvest goblinite as well as food from my pastures!

Easiest way to irrigate I've found in to dig into a murky pool, just make sure the farm 'room' is at least 2 x the size of the pool.

best way to the whole problem would be to consult the wiki because it answers all the question fast

i declare that op is a lazy one :P

anyways

an easy way for farmplots is .. after you dig out the first layout try to create a makeshift well at first if you got a brook or river or large enough murky pools to tap (emptied out murkies can be covered with floor or sealed with walls afterwards to prevent access from outside /rivers can be accessed safely by fortification/channel combo)

after that just declare the well a water source and  build a walkway with channels next to it above your x*3 farmplot and keep pit/ponding each tile ..

That's almost exactly what I do.  I like to get a well in place ASAP because it becomes vital when you have wounded dwarves during winter months (or during a siege, etc.).  Once you have the well, which is the hard part, having some dwarves take water from it and dump it on the farm plots is simple, albeit tedious due to all the micromanagement.

The only difference is that I use 2x2 farm plots.

i dont see wells being difficult to make besides finding a good position and digging .. making a small 2-3 zlevel reservoir on the ground even helps saving up more water on dry maps

i usually when starting in high ground (hills) do a central shaft in midst of where my base will be, so each level can make access; on lowground therewill be a shaft to the side of the map where it will feed future baracks/makeshift hospital (mostly near the first entrance) and a central shaft down to the caverns (more secured by bait tunnels with statues and animals and traps in the low areas .. for the case of flying/b-destroyers)

the difficult stuff is just to survive untill it gets going so you can irrigate without leaving the fortress

I just dig into flowing rivers. I've yet to see a dwarf actually drown from it. Besides, where's the fun in letting it freeze first?
