Pressure traps set off by pets?
« on: October 21, 2010, 03:36:28 pm »

Hello,

I'd like to make some pressure plate traps that are set off indirectly by invaders, including trap avoid ones, and I'd like experts' opinion.

My plan is to have a single pressure plate surrounded by walls, with one door (pet forbidden) for access and fortifications all around so invaders can see inside from the corridor. The walled area will be a pit, so I can drop a tamed animal from above to trigger the pressure plate all the time.

While the animal is alive, it will be stuck on the plate, unable to get out, and the plate will be triggered continuously. Until an invader comes along, sees it, and kills it. Then the plate will not be triggered any more, and the trap will set off.

Would that work? Or will the weight of the dead animal keep the plate triggered?

You will need to set the pressure plate to be triggered by citizens when you build it, and you will need to set the minimum weight on the pressure plate to be low enough that the pet will trigger it.  This may prevent you from using a very small animal, such as a kitten.  Otherwise this should work - the animal will trigger the pressure plate when it is dropped on it, and untrigger the pressure plate when it dies.  Objects such as animal corpses don't trigger pressure plates.

I assume you meant [TRAPAVOID] and were confusing it with [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2]...

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Well if you want building destroyers you could have the plate on the same level as the walkway and a floodgate keeping the animal on it. Then even if the corpse still triggers the plate (pretty sure not) the animal runs off of it anyway. Likewise pets behind fortifications could trigger for anything with ranged attacks.

No it won't. Fortifications or windows will though.

Sorry, my bad. I actually meant both but somehow got confused in the progress.
