Best Battle for Wesnoth campaign! -Swamplings-
« on: October 21, 2010, 06:48:01 am »

I know there are some Wesnoth players on here, so I just had to share my discovery of the best Wesnoth campaign. You play as a goblin in the era where the goblins first learned to ride wolves.

The campaign is amazing - plotwise, its pretty good. There are lots of unique levels beyond "steamroll the opposition". The dozen or so main characters have a ton of unique dialogue in various situations. The writing is spot on. The special units work really well and make for an interesting game (though some of them REALLY need their own graphics, as several use the basic  goblin sprite.)

All in all, a really wonderful campaign, its finally managed to push Under the Burning Sun out of my top spot, and with ease!

Has anyone else played it?

Then again, I consider Infinity to be overly ambitious, something that might easily spell it's downfall.

"Compatibility mode", dude. If he tries running it under "capatability mode" some terrible thing involving elder gods will probably happen.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

Yeah, I don't think you can really link to an add-on campaign.

Its the one with a poison bottle symbol, if that helps.

The RNG in this game screws me over more than in any other game by a long shot. It enrages me.

a good (perhaps) campaign obscured by a badly designed game. I find Wesnoth un-engaging against a computer opponent. I think it's popular because it's a big open source project, but for some reason, I have had a hard time finding it fun.

AND I HAVE BEEN GIVING IT A CHANCE FOR MANY YEARS NOW.

I have been playing it off and on for a very long time as well. Every time I begin to enjoy a campaign, I get destroyed by completely unlucky (or unfair?) rolls, and I stop seeing a point to it.

Well, in campaign mode, that's why they have the "restart this turn" button.

I admit, for some campaigns, I've saved it halfway through the enemy turn so I can get the results I wanted... but usually thats because I get too attached to certain characters that you don't need more than a hands down need to. Usually.

I generally find a lot of campaigns screw up the difficulty or balance. Its not easy. But I'd say many of the campaigns are at least as much fun as the Fire Emblem games, which obviously aren't for everyone.

Though I do think most of the multi-player stuff is a lot more fun, a few campaigns really are very enjoyable, like Swamplings - but I play the two modes for completely different reasons.

Wesnoth is like Blood Bowl- the odds of utter failure are pretty high, so you have to plan accordingly.  Expect failure and hope for success.

Hope is the first step to disappointment.

Dude, you should just give the game a chance.

What turned me off about the game was how your troops fought differently on every type of terrian AND at night. Lots of combinations to keep in mind.

Is there any way to keep leveled up units in Multiplayer?

What do you mean? there are several multiplayer campaigns that let you keep leveled up troops between scenarios.

I only tried multiplayer once and was kind of confused with the how everything worked together. I think I just need to look into it more, I had fun with the game when I played it before.

the problem with multiplayer is that there's a lot to know if you want to play it well. Defenses, Resistances, alignments, of both your units and your opponents. Placement, shielding units. And every bit tilts the odds in your favour, but even if you do everything right you can still get screwed now and again. So its definitely for a certain type of person, but I think its enjoyable.

Also, everyone likes Colosseum because you don't need to give a damn about any of the things I just said. :P
