Artificial rivers and flow?
« on: October 21, 2010, 03:28:59 am »

I read the wiki article on flow and I'm not sure if this works the way I think it does - if you create an artificial river underground, will it have flow and be able to power a water wheel or not?  It kind of sounds like not.

Yes. Pumps cause flow in water. I built a water reactor on a different level than the river (thus breaking the natural flow) and it runs as long as the pump works.

I'm trying to avoid the "perpetual motion" reactor thing, I mean strictly gravity fed water, e.g. you have cavern water on one level and dig a path for it to drain into another level.

I only brought up the reactor thing as an example, as it was in an area that should not have natural flow. On a side note, the reactor I mentioned started itself once the water in the reservoir reached 4/7. I.e. the waterwheels were triggered purely by the water flowing into the chamber from the level above, no pumps involved.

So yeah, most likely a waterwheel works in an underground river as long as you can maintain a constant inflow and keep the level between 4/7 and 7/7

I have it in mind to try that but the work involved is pretty large so I was hoping to get some idea whether it would work before actually doing it.  Thanks, it does sound like it should work based on your example.
