Dwarven seal of !!Science!!
« on: October 21, 2010, 01:23:19 am »

Does anyone have a link to this picture? I've been looking for it and I can't seem to find it.

Also, on a map with a volcano and no water aside from rain, how can I build my fortress inside the volcano? Do I need to drain it and then build inside it, or is there a way to cast obsidian inside the volcano without it caving in? If I can't cast directly into the volcano I'll drain it into my embark after building a really big wall to keep the magma in (so my fortress will be surrounded by a megavolcano).

While flooding by mining is done slowly, tediously and by accident, flooding by dwarven engineering is done with great speed, endless vigor and also by accident.

Draining a volcano sounds awesome no matter how you look at it. Do it. Flood the world with magma. The trees and bushes will grow back... I think.

I tried to flood the world with magma once in 40d. The magma burned everything in its path, and basically it started a fire that spread across the land, but it didn't cross z-levels, so it stopped at the edge of a slope. Wish I had taken screenshots, but I was too busy laughing like a maniac.

Yes, thank you! That is EXACTLY what I was looking for.
Now on a dark background for comparison...

I'm also trying to work out a way to drain the volcano 'safely', i.e. the dwarf lives (and doesn't catch fire, or run into the volcano, or decide to hold a !!party!!, or challenge a magma man to a duel, or run away from a gazelle who followed him into the tunnel, or decide that the open floodgate is actually closed and he can't pass, or that he has nowhere he particularly needs to be).

Sadly in 2010 I have been unable to start any fires. What gives?

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I've done this before, it's very time consuming, but enough room is given for a nice self-susaining tower.

1. What you do run water over the top layer and cast obsidian.
2. Dig out this obsidian and fill in the new -1 Z-level layer with water
3. Collapse a platform built and hanging over the crater
4. run water in to fill any missed holes and then go to step 2

Alternately, fill the crater with 2/7 and have the miners dig it out manually I found out that at some point (I think with 7/7) collapsing the platform as mentioned will obsidianize multiple layers.

WATER is the universal solvent.
MAGMA is the universal solution.

There was a gif of a dwarf murdering another dwarf and drawing E=mc on the floor with said dwarf's (unidentified limb), then dropping the body part and standing on the = and making it read Emc2.
