Subterranean trees and 31.16
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:34:30 pm »

Gday all

Since using version 31.16 I've not been able to grow any subterranean trees. I usually breach the first cavern by smoothing the stone then carving a fortification in it. I clear a big area of sand (sometimes clay) since its easy to dig through, and then flood it with water and let it evaporate.

In my most recent fort I've not yet cleared my big area but my under-ground farming area has empty space that has been muddied, but still no trees/shrubs will grow.

Will test a bit more tonight by actually breaking through the wall of the cavern before sealing it up, but apart from that I'm out of ideas.

Were there any trees in the cavern you discovered? Some caverns won't have any water in them, and they'll be completely devoid of plant life as a result (and thus wouldn't provide any "spores" for growing them within your fortress).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Im not sure but I think trees only grow on muddied rock or on soil but not on muddied soil.
EDIT: I think I said something wrong.

I'll double check if there were trees in the cavern I breached, but that does sound like the most likely explanation.

I'll breach a fertile cavern if that is the case.

In my game I have only shrubs from lvl 3 growing on the (unmuddied) sand floor. No trees.

Im sure that trees can grow on unmuddied soil floors because I have see very often young trees in m'y red sand fortress ( even though most of them are dead due to the dwarves )

Aye. Sand is enough, no mud required. Mud is only needed if it is a stone floor.

It depends on the type of sand/soil - plain old "sand" won't grow them (pretty sure that's one), although the sub-types of sand will.  There are some soil types that just do not grow underground plants even though their raw entries are exactly the same.

Pretty sure that's completely false - all soil types are the same as far as the game is concerned. The only known issue is that being in an Ocean biome has been observed to block plant growth, but that's related to location and has nothing to do with the actual soil type.

Also, unmuddied soil must have unmined soil walls directly beneath it in a 2-tile radius or mud within a 2-tile radius on the same Z-level (see experiment results here).
