But not as hard as Anonymous could, i.e. getting thrown in jail.

Anonymous as a whole is far too large and decentralized/disorganised for such a fate. It may befall some of them, but the force as a whole will remain almost unaltered.

One thing about large groups is that striking a few down can cause fear in the others.

edit: damn I got ninja'd.

They do not have the attention span to fear.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Or it could splinter into a new group that the main body of Anon hates, like Project Chanology.

But it should be interesting to watch in the meantime.

It always annoys me when people try to paint "anonymous" as an actual group, rather than the ephemeral collection of random pissed-off people who run across someone saying "hey lol let's ddos these motherfuckers lol" and think "boy, that sounds like a good idea!" that refer to themselves as "anonymous" because it both saves them from having to come up with/argue over a name and gives the illusion of a single persistent organization doing all these things. The anti-Scientologist protesters being a slight exception, considering that was basically an existing movement being bolstered by a wave of anger towards scientology for a time (it can't really be said that those who remained in the movement afterwards were a splinter group, since they a) were never part of a larger group to splinter from and b) in effect just joined the existing movement).

I find it funny how everyone attempts to quantify Anonymous.

Anonymous is not a person. It is not a group of people. It is more of an idea.

And so whenever the press mentions the "Organization of Anonymous" I laugh, because there is no such thing as the "Organization of Anonymous". Attacking one half of Anonymous will only make the other half laugh.

And there is no way to kill anonymous, because it exists in all of us.

It depends how you define it, I for one see it as a raise in narcissism coupled with the fantasy that one can be 'anonymous' and the turning of creative energy and frustrations of youth to being shit heads.

This is the kind of ridiculous nonsense that gets things like Chanology going and turns /b/ - Random into /b/ - Boyscouts

Again, you can dress it up in fancy duds like this, it's still actual people doing actual things, which is what the FBI gets kinda pissy about.

The real bot herders run the same kind of servers that CP is hosted on and aren't about to be caught by anybody. The FBI will pick up a couple of kids running LOIC, nothing more, *if* that- their cyber investigation team is so flimsy these days that it's reduced to doing tech support for the rest of the DOJ, last I heard.

Gonna have to back up Aqizzar here. This is going to go down the only way it ever, ever goes down. Anonymous does some slightly amusing things, perhaps a few people get arrested, Gene Simmons fumes impotently, then claims victory, and after a few months nobody gives a shit and nothing's changed.

Anonymous (that is, everyone who's ever had a grudge but no energy to do anything about it for long, i.e. everyone on the internet) have proven time and again they can dish out punches and then just piss fart about and then go and do something else.
