What do you mean "created as an archer squad"? All the dwarves have ranged weapons assigned?

I mean, when I created a squad using the "Archer" uniform, they used the archery ranges I set up but they never did melee weapon classes and never sparred, although they did do dodging, striking and wrestling group classes; in spite of having a melee weapon assigned to them (modified their equipment manually).  The squad I set up with the "Metal Armor" uniform sparred as expected, although I didn't assign them ranged weapons so I don't know if they would have used the archery range.
edit: that was across 5 years of watching them, and I've only really set up a military training schedule once, so take it with a grain of salt.

I equip everyone with metal armour, but ranged dwarves get ranged weapon personal choice instead of melee weapon personal choice.

The crossbowdwarves just use the targets, they never spar.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Sorry if I seem like a condescending prick, but do you have the latest version?
This was an older bug, but its been fixed since about .12 (I'm not sure)
and definitely fixed in the latest version

In my current fort I have a squad of archers who are all able to shoot their bows, but they do not use the practice range while the squad is active/training - they spar.  I'm fairly convinced this has to do with the uniform assigned to squad members, even though this squad was created with "Archer" I changed them to a custom uniform and they never used the archery ranges again, but they've started sparring.  I'll fool around with it some more and see if I can get it to do something consistent.

belay that, I'd disbanded the squad and recreated it so the above is meaningless, oops.
yep, the ranges are correctly assigned to train the new squad and it works again

For hammer and mace dwarves, have them fight weak monsters like creeping eyes or something. 20 RL minutes later, Skilled in the weapon and armor too, if they have it on. Creeping eyes are nigh impossible to kill with maces or hammers. so they make great training fodder. Gotta love my squad of Hammer and Mace Lords. And they started with absolutely no skills in combat. At ALL

I have a notion that maybe the "willingness to try new things" attribute has an effect on whether a noob dwarf will shoot a crossbow or not, I can't really think of any other reason why a few will and the great majority will not.

All "recruit" dwarf that have been assigned crossbows should use them, you just have to make sure you assigned them some ammo in the military screen.
I forgot to assign some ammo to my dwarves and almost lost a siege because of it (I only use the military for my defence), the dwarves didn't train and didn't shoot from their watch tower I build untill I assigned them some bolts.

I understand that they should, but they don't, or at least almost all of them don't (one exception I can remember).  Gobs of weapons, gobs of ammo manufactured and piled and assigned to the squad, gobs of quivers, and all the uniforms have a weapon assigned, but they prefer to melee if they don't have any skill.

Is the ammo in ammo bins? Then they will not equip it.

I don't know about that, mine have no problem equipping bolts from bins.
