I mean, his untimely death after his disappearance was noticed here in the States.  It's equally likely that he stopped showing up in public as a result of some sort of medical condition.  And sufficient time has passed since his disappearance to make all sorts of plausible conditions take hold.

Most wealthy people prefer to die in the privacy of their own estates, and I gather this isnt the first time he was sidelined by he-who-shall-not-be-named.  He was pretty old, right?  Well beyond life expectancy.


As far as: the news.  Yeah, I dont know what the news cycle is like in China, but our news love sensationalism and playing up anxiety in people.  It makes them watch more news.

Not very old, but mortality starts ratcheting up pretty steadily around that age level, and dying in your sixties isn't particularly unusual.

It's one of the reasons 65 is a fairly common retirement age.

Yeah, conspiracies aren't often spread by the state media here (only military conspiracies (i.e., Ukraine is the real aggressor in the Russia-Ukraine conflict)), but the state media also does nothing to tamp down on conspiracies in the comments sections on their newspapers. They can and will if it's anything anti-government/party, but will toe the line if they think the conspiracy will inevitably spiral toward 'somehow, this is Taiwan/Japan/USA's fault'. If the you-know-who here is someone high up in Chinese politics, I'm surprised the comments are still up.

When the comments talk about this , they use a mysterious allegory which sounds like this:

I kind of like the latter one.

The former has truth to it in its own way as well.  The way politics works is that the senior delegates his power to the underling, who then wields that real power in a way that favors him.  The senior has the power in principle, but in practice cannot do all of the functions of the jobs he oversees.  If power is seen as a zero-sum game, where one side gains power at the expense of the other side, then any gains the underling makes is at the potential expense of the senior.
