Is a club sandwich, with three slices of bread, two sandwiches stacked on top of each other with one of the middle piece of bread being part of both sandwiches, or one giant sandwich?

Now hold up, there. Waffles (and pancakes, for that matter) count for bread in sandwich making, no question.

Instead of bread, I'd say go with something like contiguous grain based material. That largely precludes things like sticking something between two dry ramen blocks (don't judge me, it didn't taste good anyway), while leaving waffles and pancakes, rightly, as possible structural sandwich components. It also okays most ice cream sandwich constructions.
I agree with this, waffles and pancakes are pretty much bread!

I'll say it again, stuff like this is making me doubt y'all have ever eaten lasagna. That stuff don't stay on the outside of whatever you eat with it or hold together with any sort of consistency, or if it does for whatever y'all are eating you folks make some weirdass lasagna.

Any case, you're free to make an exception for pasta if you really feel like it. There's a reason "something like" was in that sentence, you doofs.

It's pretty clear using just bread as a sandwich heuristic is flat wrong, though.

How about using leftover fridge lasagna? I certainly made weirder combinations including non bread ones.

Also in food weird isn't bad, for me experimenting with some new dish is the best part of cooking, also when traveling its amazing how little twists and local ingredients have such major affect on flavor.

Something wedged between two lasagna sheets isn't necessarily lasagna.

You could be eating an uncooked-lasagna-based ham "sandwich" and by your definition it's still a sandwich.

A crunchy sandwich of sorts. What about wasa? Sandwichn't? What about Zwieback? Sandwichn't?

What's even the point of this if your language has no way to designate half a sandwich, you know just one slice of bread with something on it.

Though tbf I don't super agree with using wiki as translator here... butterbrot only goes to dutch stuff with no mention of open or closed, while the tartine article is being kind of annoying about showing open breads. My brother in christ who takes an open tartine to work, they don't stop being tartines if you make 'em able to not sully a box. Wikipedia is usually the absolutely perfect translator but tartine is Smörgås in german? That's danish go home your drunk wiki. Is that what the IP skirter spends his time at? Because then you have my axe.

This is leaving out the question of is an ice cream sandwich a sandwich? It has no bread and is two cookies on the opposite sides of a lump of ice cream. Cookies definitely aren't bread.

I think GO said they were sandwich adjacent.

Edit: though why we’re taking them as some sort of arbiter in this just because their vociferous in their opinion is questionable.

Think for yourselves! Free the sandwiches!

Edit2: if you want to think that putting something between two or another something is a sandwich? Go right ahead!

If you want to call a piece of bread between two pieces of meat a sandwich! You got it, bucko?

You want to call putting things on a single piece of bread an open-faced sandwich? You the boss, boss.

You want to call a hot dog in a bun a sandwich? Get out of here we don’t want your kind.

Edit3: are pizzas giant open-faced sandwiches?

First off, shut up with your hereitcal ramblings on what constitutes a sandwich.

Second, yes, you are using me as the arbiter for being vociferous. That's how the internet has always worked.

Third, a pizza isn't a sandwich as standard. However pizza dough is a type of bread and, although it upsets me a bit to say so, if you cut it in half and put the two halves together you'd have a greasy, cheesy sandwich.
