Welp, just got spooked by algorithmic Big Brother again.

I watched a knowledge hub video quite a while ago about the the competition between streaming services, and the guy makes an offhand mention about some old black&white courtroom drama called Perry Mason. The whole point of the remark was that it was a show that nobody remembers in the present day.


Today while using Firefox and browsing Pocket articles (I consider it important to stay up to date on current news), an article about Perry Mason shows up in my feed...

Now what spooks me is not the fact that an algorithm remembered that I watched a Youtube video and decided to latch onto an insignificant detail and recommend me content based off it, it's the fact that someone wrote a Perry mason article in [Current year]!

Either there's some sort of underground Perry Mason movement going on that managed to incept the youtuber with the idea of the show¹, or whoever is in charge of deciding what kind of articles to write somehow saw the unusual buzz in the comments section that remark made (either directly or through something like google trends) and commissioned an article to try to capitalize on something that they thought was going to be significant.

I don't know who Jerma is on Youtube. I don't _want_ to know. That's the signal I've been sending when I say "Don't recommend this channel" on Youtube about these. Every single video that mentions Jerma gets flagged by me as don't show me this. I blocked Jerma's actual channel a year ago, and now I'm inundated with these parasitic clip channels. I've blocked over 30 of them and yet more keep showing up in my feed.

Amazing how the Youtube algorithm seems to conveniently ignore this data point time and time again, despite me being abundantly clear. It's almost like it's going to recommend this shit to me regardless of what I say or do.

So since I can't say it to Youtube, I have to vent it here.

It's possible just ignoring them might work better than actually telling youtube to ignore it, though? When you say "don't recommend", well... you're engaging with the algorithm. Maybe it's not seeing "don't show me this", it's seeing "this person will interact with me if I show this stuff" and reacting accordingly.

"Don't recommend" has always worked for me to block a channel, but Nenjin is getting bombarded by *other* channels which post Jerma clips.  That's gotta be frustrating indeed
