Some dingus dug up a four-year-old thread on the steam forum for Shadow of War just to +1 a gripe about there being a black character in the game. A black character who is specifically described as being born to Haradrim parents.

Because obviously, "Haradrim" only means the Arabic-looking people we saw in the Peter Jackson movies, and there exist no people in Middle Earth who are darker than that. So this character is just woke pandering and is ruining the game for them because it's not immersive to the world Tolkien developed.


No mention of how Shelob is inexplicably a big tiddy goth GF, I guess they're fine with that part.

If there was ever such a claim - which I doubt, at least from anybody who had any real idea what they were talking about - it would be because it was assumed that computers would cap out in raw power. Chess has been a solved game for a long time, and it is an incredibly easy game for a computer to master. It isn't even accurate to say that chess is orders of magnitude easier than full proper language parsing and idiomatic translation, because they are such fundamentally different tasks that the comparison makes no sense.

Minimax is how you solve chess. Pretty simple technique. The main difficulty for humans is maintaining a large working memory.

I think in part this is messing with my head because the Covid lockdowns exist in a weird non-time state in my personal timeline, so everything before then feels like it's two years younger than it should be.

You know, I heard that claim about never being able to beat us at chess, but I never questioned it.

Now that I've tried looking for a source for the quote, I haven't been finding much luck. I actually found a bit of evidence that a Chess Grandmasters may have originally said it, but nothing conclusive. Still, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that sport champions are prone to hubris.

In 1968, International Chess Master David Levy bet that no computer could beat him at chess in 10 years, and that if he did win, it would be another ten after that before a computer beat him.

It's certainly not an obvious choice of agency to run them. I would have thought historic buildings would be the job of a historical society, rather than what is essentially a group of Game Wardens turned wildlife conservationalists.
