Sure, symbiotic bacteria get a good deal, but they're very different organisms from viruses. I haven't heard of any symbiotic viruses, and I'd find it very interesting if they existed!

Many placental mammals utilize hijacked viral protiens to protect the developing fetus from the mother's immune system. The DNA that codes for said protien is of viral origin, that became a permanent part of the host genome.

No thankfully the virus thread has not yet caught that dumpster fire.  A good place to start on the science and the various claims is this factcheck.  It has links to nearly all of the important papers/statements.  Beyond that I'd just add that gain of function is also a naturally occurring process, case in point - the evolution of the delta variation.
