I mean, "change" in this case means practically rebuilding entire cities and possibly re-writing quite a bit of zoning laws.

If it allows people without cars to be able to get places I don’t see a problem, it’ll be a lot of work but I think it’d help a lot of people

Would you still say that if it was your home that had to be demolished to do it? Not only driving you out on the streets, but ensuring you had nowhere to possibly go because they have to tear down half the city to rework it?

Unless you're willing to put thousands of people into homelessness, there's no way to reengineer US cities except over a span of decades.

Then a span of decades it shall take, so long as it gets done

Not to mention the actual, unfortunate history of doing exactly that to minority communities and neighborhoods for the sake of highways and freeways.

I think the bigger problem is the financial insolvency of low-density suburbs in general which Not Just Bikes also made a few videos on.

That’s a problem that will resolve itself one way or another. Either we demolish the burbs and build something more sustainable. Or the cities they’re in become bankrupt and we have to demolish and rebuild due to an inability to maintain the necessary infrastructure anymore.

The consequences of this are going to be massive and I find it so strange that such a looming catastrophe doesn’t have more awareness.

Complex systems are capable of continual renewal, they just require planned obsolescence, or something similar. (organic bodies use apoptosis for this purpose.)

Human societies want things to NEVER CHANGE.  You cant tear down that 200 year old house, because HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE!!.  you can't use imminent domain to demolish that row of houses, because PROPERTY RIGHTS! MY FAMILY HAS LIVED THERE FOR 3 GENERATIONS!

The unreasonableness of the human sentiment is directly causal to the collapse you are referring to.  It is the reason why dont maintain our highways properly. Why condos literally get neglected to the point they fall the fuck apart and kill hundreds of people.

Ironically Wierd, those 3 generation old rows of historical houses were probably better built, or at the very least more sustainably built than the suburbs we have today (Assuming they predate WWII).

They’re the only living proof of the existence of a better way. Proof that we didn’t always live in a car-dependant suburban mess.

No, see, PROPER renewal strategy requires strategic excess, so that when you say-- need to close down a condo SO YOU CAN FUCKING FIX IT BEFORE IT KILLS PEOPLE,  you have a place to fucking put them.

"But then we would have to pay money for more infrastructure than the bare base minimum (or below minimum!)!! MY PROFIT MARGINS!!!"

Unreasonableness takes many forms.  Silicon valley? Manifest unreasonableness. The cost of living there is in the fucking stratosphere because all the tech giants want larger campuses, and any residential property that goes up for sale gets bought up by those big players at prices no ordinary person can afford.  There is BELOW baseline housing!

What do the tools in CA do to fix the problem? RENT CONTROL-- Artificial price caps to keep the few properties that ARE still residential, affordable, because of the INSANE DEMAND CURVE jacking up the actual market price. Slap that bandage on and wrap it with duct tape boys!  Actually fix the problem, and confiscate some corporate property for housing!?  WHAT, ARE YOU MAD!?  Imminent Domain only goes ONE WAY!! ONE WAY!!!

Actually shut those condos down, and FORCE the owners to FIX them!?  UNTHINKABLE!

Tear them down and build newer, safer ones!? WHAT-- ARE YOU A SOCIALIST!?

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?

Wierd has a background of guiding brain-addled geriatrics around so that they don't eat their own excrement too much.

If that's not relevant experience for politics, I don't know what is!

I’d vote for you. We need people that think long term, to avoid future problems caused by short term thinking and possibly mitigating existing problems. You’re better at thought mentioning than me. I have trouble wording things right.
