I don't think this is even remotely true but I'll leave you to it.

Once I found out Subway used a rubber vulcanizing agent on their bread, I swore it off forever. They stopped doing that when the news broke, but if they were willing to do that with their bread.....can guarantee they've done all sorts of other things with their products. So I'd pretty much rather go hungry and put Subway in my body.

sodium hydroxide is used to make pretzel bread...

Literally, painting lye on, is what makes the brown crunchy of the crust.

Near as I could tell from a quick look, the specific ingredient was azodicarbonamide, whatever that's used for, which beyond subway and shoes was being used all over the place and supposedly safe for human consumption. Didn't look too hard, though.

E: A&W restaurants are apparently still using it in their burger buns, for what it's worth, heh. Dunno if I've ever even seen one of those in person...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azodicarbonamide

Apparently it is a bleaching agent and dough conditioner.

It makes the bread whiter, and tougher (with less kneading/rising time).  Useful for fast-paced assembly line style manufacture of foods.

Basically, it makes the bread look more attractive, and makes it cheaper to produce in scale (as time is money.)

I always thought it was rather silly that we afford hedge funds the kind of cheap credit they need to purchase houses at above market value to drive up inflation and increase their returns without adding any value to the economy, whilst denying families the kind of cheap credit they need to purchase the houses the hedge funds will use to skim dry to repay their own mortgages

Because if hedge funds fuck up the government will bail them out.

Meanwhile if the family fucks up they die on a streetside, I guess.

making? It's been here for 50 years.

What we are seeing here, is just the end of the middle class, and the return of the plutarchs and the serfs as the major demographics.

Progress has been made though, the difference in wealth between the serfs and the plutarchs will be many times greater this time, than in the Middle Ages

In other news, today I learned you can overdose on nutmeg. Don't think I'd ever heard about the hallucinatory side of the stuff before...

Apparently it's like SUPER shitty an experience, too. Like, 0% fun at all if you were looking for a mindbending experience. I thiiiink you need like the proper core of the nutmeg and not just a large quantity of the latte powder, though?

The nutmeg powder is made of the ground up core.

Mace is made from the aril surround the seed. Nutmeg from the seed.
(the excocarp is not used as a spice. It is used as a fruit in local Indonesian cuisine.)

Yes. It is a hallucinogen when consumed in large quantities. The trippy dose is close to the lethal dose.  Not safe, not desirable.
(But people still do it-- Like people doing moonflower datura.)

It's one of those "legal highs", isn't it? It's something people do because they're so desperate to trip balls that they completely ignore the whole "not dying" thing.
