As far as I can tell, they mostly do it as a side grift. Once you get moderately well-known, you end up with free games and some small income from ads. So some money with no real additional costs.

I can't imagine most make enough to have it as an actual job. Some, certainly, but not most.

Yeah, pretty much. It's also a fair amount of work and some decent upfront costs in a lot of cases, so... yeah. Side grift with maybe some benefits, probably best just done for enjoyment with anything financial considered to be a happy bonus. If you incidentally catch on and get fairly big, that can change, but it's hella' rough trying to bank on it.

It seems there was a power struggle within the central committee that led to a megalomaniac seizing control (pushing unpopular policies and repressing dissent), but there are signs of liberalization as international relations normalize and the regime adopts more moderate positions. Today there is hope for solid ongoing development, but growing rebel groups continue to hold territory and the regime remains something of a pariah.
