Yeah, nah, I got attacked for saying that I disagreed with the Yale student association that said there should be separate and isolated areas for every minority on campus... Because apartheid is apparently the solution to discrimination.

My experience with Bay12 off site communities, including some DF communities, has been this nearly every single time. Not this opinion specifically, but the attitude towards people who don't agree. It seems as though they either start out formed by people who can't handle having their opinions contested, or they gradually become more and more cult-like in accepted opinions and scare off the decent users.

I don't know why Bay12 specifically attracts people like this, seeing it has mostly been fairly live and let live and relaxed, except for certain lower board drama threads.

Actually, what I strongly suspect about the situation Kagus described at Yale, is that those particular subset of students get all their perceived power by being at the head of an "outrage machine". They need to constantly be generating outrage to justify their existence and their moral authority over the rest of campus.

The college administration probably already implemented all their sensible demands, so there's mandatory racial sensistivity training, consent training, safe spaces for gay students, a well-funded feminist / women's space. And a zillion other pro-diversity initiatives well supported by the faculty and administration. They've banned books that might upset anyone, and put trigger warnings / content warnings at the start of every course. etc etc.

So, how to the little outrage assholes get their kicks now? they need to come up with something supposedly "social justic-y" but so far outside what can actually be implemented to finally get a "no we can't do that" from the administration, then that particular group of students can jump up and down about how they've proven that the administration are Nazis, despite pretty much every other demand they've ever had being met.

it's like a nation who want a Casus Belli, so they issue an ultimatum, but they have to include something completely ridiculous in it to ensure the enemy doesn't inadvertently agree to the demands, thus derailing the war efforts.

So apparently putting a sign on your franchise restaurant door saying children should behave or risk removal, where behave is defined as "keep food on trays and butts in chairs", is deemed so offensive that the corporate office issues a public apology and reprimanded the store manager.

Holy crap, asking people to be civil in a restaurant is now offensive? I mean I guess how I can see how that sign would be a little over the top, since kids can be pretty unruly, but not offensive.

I eventually had a falling out with the same irc after we had a fight over me wanting them to stop overtly wishing death and beatups on polito-trolls (the person in question was that gay conservative with I think a greek- or Italian-sounding name, can't remember what it was exactly, who used to go around campuses harassing trans people (the one who was very quickly dropped by the media when it turned out he was a paedophile or something) so I get that they were angry, it was just the level of hatred that made me uncomfortable) and it was made clear to me afterwards that I wasn't welcome there any more.

It's kind of ironic, this were the same clique of people that would straight up bully a guy for being a furry every time he came on until I repeatedly told them to stop. Several off them had nothing to do with DF or the DF forums any longer, and as I recall it one or two were banned from here in the first place. In hindsight, it was a group of pretty awful people.

All this talk of other sites and how they each suck in their own special way, just further enforces my thoughts that I want nothing to do with them and I'll only do my internet posting on the Bay 12.

Also Discord seems to much like social media and I want nothing to do with anything like that.

You're talking about Milo Yiannopoulos. I don't think he's actually a pedo or anything.

clips of videos-with-audio in which he talked about his own past as a teenager who had sex with men and suggested that some young teen boys might be old enough to give consent to such sexual relationships.

He was talking about gay teens who have sex with older men, but the specific context was that he was talking about himself as a teenager. People found that squicky basically, but saying that the context is that he is a pedo is a slight stretch.

Maybe, I never cared about him in the first place and don't know any specifics, I only know him by what I've heard others say of him. If I'm going to be honest I think it makes him sound like a pretty awful dude regardless. Old men preying on young men should be shamed much in the same way old men preying on young women is. We call it gubbsjuka, "old man sickness", in Swedish.

But regardless I don't want people wishing death and unfortune on people in places I come to socialise and relax. It stressed me the fuck out.
