So, my "broken" Xiaomi Redmi 2 is working. I just had to replace the battery, and now it's working as if it came straight from the factory. The hell?

my guess is that it is related to the "quick charge" feature.  This makes perfect sense, especially with LiON/LiPO.  You do NOT want to dump that much energy, that fast, into a questionable health battery.  That's how you blow up people's crotches, and or-- burn down their houses.

The sane and sensible thing is to refuse to power on, or charge, such a battery.

So, I tried unlocking the bootloader of this Redmi 2, which was a painful process. Let me summarize most of that pain in one picture:


I tried flashing the Chinese Developer ROM just to see if that'd change things, but nope.

Then I tried flashing TWRP anyway, despite the bootloader being possibly locked, then this happened:

Honestly, I wasn't accounting for the bootloader being already unlocked. I thought you'd normally have to unlock it first? I'm just confused, really. The friend that I got this thing from is definitely a phone enthusiast, but he isn't the kind to flash custom ROMs onto things.

Edit: I have LineageOS 15.1 on this thing. It boots. I'm setting it up.
Edit 2: It works. It lives!

LineageOS is probably your best bet at a long-term updated OS for that phone.

Did you get the gapps pack, or did you decide on a different app store?

I got the gapps package off OpenGApps, the absolute smallest one that was available (this thing has just 8 GB of storage).

I've been playing around with it, and it's more usable than expected. I was expecting it to chug HARD, but it's actually fairly smooth considering its lackluster specs.

LineageOS is pretty solid, and pushes frequent security updates. (usually at least one per month, which is WAAAAY better than what carriers offer.)

It's super easy to install supersu (There's a flashable zip right on their site), and unless you install gapps, there are no google tentacles.

No-nonsense, no bloatware. Just a functional AOSP.  (It often has better antenna/network tech options than the stock roms too! Go check yours and see!)


If it weren't for the fact that wifi calling is not usable with it on T-mobile, I would have stuck with it on my S5.

Also I think I may have given my computer gremlins. I couple of weeks ago I accidentally spilled tea on my laptop keyboard and the next day there was a little bubble on my screen half. Then there was two. Then three. Then five. Now there's a whole line of bubbles there. Gremlins bubbles. Grumbles.

I am up to 10 bubbles now.

Bubbles are meant to be popped while running whimsically through the backyard. My 2yr old has taught me this.

SO, my new recommendation is to run about in the woods flinging your phone into the air while swatting at it with a screwdriver.
