I think the only way to fix this is for EVERYONE to vote for one of the numerous third parties, however, with most not knowing the similarities of the 2 main parties, voting third party will split votes. The only way for third parties to get a foothold is if most vote for a third party

Another thing states can do is switch from all-or-nothing in the Electoral College to awarding the points proportionately. The reason this is effective is that it makes you into a swing state, thus candidates will throw more money at you.

If EC points are proportional then candidates also need to take more states into account and can't just slag off large chunks of the country and still expect to win. This would go some way to reducing divisiveness in campaigning.

Nobody said the candidates themselves had to do the fighting... I'm thinking each political party would have a roster of fighters ready to go at it come election time.

Well there was a Doctor Who serial once (I'm talking pre-reboot) with a planet where they strapped the Dictator into a chair, and everyone pushes "Yes" or "No" on buttons on their TV. The Dictator then gets electrocuted proportionally to how many "No" votes they got. If they die, that means they got voted out.

I approve of this method.  Lets apply it to local and state levels too.  I would get almost evil levels of glee Electrocuting Governor Senator Gollum.   If they even made it so you couldn't record it on a dvd player, I would even break out the old VCR and find an ancient VHS to record it so I can enjoy it at all times.

This would be interesting, it means the candidates would try to actually say why they would be good, rather than simply that their opponent was bad
