Bought a phone to replace my old one. It's from the same carrier my old one has, Tracfone. However for some reason, they don't have it on their network. Instead, they use a T-Mobile network. Which means I either have to get another phone, or lose my phone number and accumulated airtime. I did not discover this until the phone arrived, and then after serious digging. Since this caps off an entire day, which in turn caps off several weeks of SHIT happening, it's causing me to have a small breakdown over it.

Yeah, we're talking about a society where engineering a primitive telegraph and clay jar batteries drew worldwide attention. They were so primitive that they basically just shrugged and accepted encountering a (fairly) strong AI and the half-ruined old colony ships in orbit as another day.

In fairness though, they mostly lived in caves because they didn't have architectural knowledge good enough or a non-agricultural workforce large enough to build Thread-proof stone structures for everyone, not because they couldn't build stuff at all.

I'd assume it's something along the lines of dubious consent, and probably not dubbing over lack of consent into consent to fit what some company thinks a western audience wants

Dubious consent, yeah. Stuff that's borderline non-consensual/rape, but something's making it hard to call it that outright. Real world, it probably comes up most often with drugs (alcohol most predominantly, if only by dint of pervasiveness), cases where decision making is heavily impaired and it's difficult to impossible to be sure a yes actually means it (even if all people involved are saying it). Significant coercion or otherwise wonky power dynamics can also be involved; technically having a choice but the consequences of refusing being ruinous, one of the people involved being seriously cognitively impaired, things like that.

In relation to pern, empathic dragon things basically hijacking you and another person's brains when they're rutting would be your example. You don't have much choice in if you're going to screw or not. That the other person involved is in the same boat is probably the only thing that makes it even slightly dubious rather than just being straight up rape. Supernatural fiction plays with it a lot, too, from what I've noticed. Werewolves going into heat, junk like that.

Until I went back and reviewed the last page, I thought we were being cute with the "porn" word.

No. Pern. Low-key dragon porn lit that made it to your local library, apparently.

One of the more popular fantasy/technically!sci-fi series for a while, actually. The sex/romance things generally weren't a super huge part of them, just a part.

Not really a 'made it to you local library' thing -- most american/english-language-primary libraries that carry fiction will probably have some pern books, and most (older) sci-fi/fantasy readers will have at-least heard of McCaffrey. Pern was pretty big for a while. There were roguelikes made based off it :P

To be honest I'm more surprised that people don't know Anne McCaffrey/Pern. It's not really recent, but it's well known.

You would also have to consider, that early in the development of the culture, there would have been strong drive to create technological or biochemical means of supressing such "mating drive" in the human counterparts, that could be offered proactively (EG, part of a willful daily regimen. Such as say, with modern birth control pills.)

No, as NullForceOmega stated they were just a colony ship worth of people. Additionally, going to a planet with a few thousand people where you expect to eventually build a society of billions wouldn't imply a "strong drive" to create birth control. People going there would have expected to need to populate a planet, so they were pre- and self- selected for people who wanted to have lots of kids, but otherwise couldn't because they lived on an overcrowded and overdeveloped planet already.

When you're only bringing a limited amount of people, it's imperative that everyone has kids, in order to preserve the gene pool. People, male or female, who didn't want kids wouldn't have come in the first place, and the culture would have been strongly biased towards pressuring people to have kids, because if you don't, your genetic payload is lost to future generations. And no, they wouldn't build high-tech medical facilities with gene banks, because the entire point of emigrating is to make a new life on a frontier planet, not to replicate the techno-monstrosity that was Earth in that timeline.

I mean, fairness where it's due, if they're not much of a sf/f reader it's fairly understandable? I had no idea who Zane Grey was until like last week, ferex, and a year ago my response to Nora Roberts would have been, "Who?" Or James Patterson, for that matter, and that blighter is like the best selling author, period.

I knew about the setting, with the sci-fi dragon's and the regression of civilization into feudalism, but I didn't remember the name or the author.

Plus it's 2019. I was vaguely aware of Pern and dragons and dragonriders of Pern but didn't expect to see new WTFs regarding it 50+ years after the first book came out.

So I went home with a gal during the weekend, and we'd organized another round on Tuesday once she was off work (which was actually her idea).

What actually happened was that she stood me up and ghosted me.

Last night at around one in the morning, I got a text message saying "Sorry" and then the emoji with the monkey covering its eyes. First I've heard from her since Sunday evening. No other explanation or apology so far.
