I always suspected these sorts of machinations routinely happened in high society, but it's quite something to experience them in real time.

For Gareth Williams it almost certainly wasn't local intelligence services. Stuffing someone in a bag is way to crude and hard to explain away. Nobody would order that method of eliminating a troublesome person. They'd have dozens of more plausible plans they could use. One theory is that it was the Russians, which is plausible - if it was done by a foreign hitman who really didn't give a shit and only wanted to be in and out as quickly as possible, while also not carrying anything he could be arrested for having.

Basically, when two people are having a conversation, either you're in dialogue with them or overhearing two NPCs, usually when you(or one of the conversing people) mentions something usually bad, the other will often respond with "It was inevitable." or "That's terrifying." It began with the addition of extended conversation trees, which I think was 2016, but I could be wrong. I can't find the release announcement for that feature.

"It was inevitable" is also a major line from The Matrix: Revolutions.
