What's the difference between 8chan and 4chan? I don't really pay attention...
8chan was created as an alternative to 4chan when moot sold out. The comparison's pretty apt: it took all of the bad elements of imageboard-style site architecture and combined them with all of the deranged ego-boosting bullshit of reddit, but like George_Chickens said it ended up being overrun by the same type of skinhead morons who ruined /pol/ because they thought that it wasn't ironic.

Also I seem to recall hearing that it was being used for a lot of out-and-out illegal porn before the Stormfront types took over.

I recall that the site was delisted from google over child porn.

That was one of the "worse things" I was speaking of. Actual pedophiles from Masterchan viewed the site as stealing their thunder (because it had creatable boards, too) and set up bots to spam most boards without active moderation with child porn, and then reported said porn to Google. The publicity it got for being full of CP attracted a ton of more pedos, who were eventually banned and reported to the police. Child porn was always a bannable offence on the site, though.

Not a happy beginning, but also not surprising. 4chan's reputation early on attracted the same crowd, which were removed in a similar way.

Found at the bottom of a clothes hamper where it's been sitting for almost a decade: a 6-inch thick binder filled with a photocopied AutoCAD manual from 1986.

That sounds like an amazing find. You should scan it and archive it.

You should scan it and archive it.
It is several hundred pages. I also do not have a scanner.

I also found a Relic-brand watch. I know I've had it for about as long as that binder was in the clothes hamper, if not longer. I can't find the year it was made based on its model number(ZR66008), but more recent models sell for $80-$120 on Amazon. Battery is long dead, but the rest of the watch appears to be in solid shape.

Something that I always forget, and which I always get reminded about, is the Library has a scanner. See if your town or city library will let you spend some time scanning that, and put it onto a thumb drive.

For reals a museum might be interested in that.

Can't speak for other systems, but in ours every branch has a fax machine/scanner for patron use. Keep in mind that if you have newer branches with more high-tech stuff, those are your best bets for finding one with a feed tray, since scanning every page manually is going to take a long fucking time. They're also more likely to have the machine in a public-facing space rather than having it be staff-served. If you go into one that's even remotely busy with an older scanner behind a desk, odds are they're not going to be able to spend the time to scan in a couple hundred pages.

Not trivially, anyway. It might still be possible to talk with the folks there and arrange something piecemeal. Libraries tend to be pretty helpful about a lot of stuff if you're willing to ask nicely. Something like that would be kind of a pain (especially for the branch libraries that don't have a dedicated scanner setup anywhere) where I'm working at these days, but if someone came in wanting to do it we'd probably figure something out.

... scanning in several hundred pages is something you ask about anyway, especially in a smaller branch where there's only one scanner (if you're lucky), just to be polite and mebbe' preemptively set something up so other patrons can step in for a bit to handle smaller projects. So on and so forth. If you're going to give a communal machine a workout, please observe basic consideration, heh.

Trust me, most people don't bother, so it's not too big of a deal. I've had people come in wanting to fax 50+ pages ten minutes before closing.

Similar stuff here, too, sure (though generally not specifically that, since we charge a buck a page for faxes and our area's pretty shitpoor, so...). I'm not technically front desk, but we play musical employees pretty regularly, so any particular day I could be dealing with stuff like that. Please observe basic consideration :P

... though that said, most of the folks that show up at our branches are pretty reasonable, from what I've noticed. Might be an artifact of being a small area but I'unno. It being shitpoor and expectations being low might play into it, too.

Just had a full-on anxiety freakout thanks to my mother gleefully needling me when I was already on the verge of flipping out.
I am not sure how she manages to be so insensitive... I haven't kept my anxiety a secret or anything, and I had already made her aware that I was up to my eyeballs in it during that outing and really, really wanted to get home.
