I discovered what kicks can do when I accidentally launched the instructors daughter 10-12ft through the air after nailing a particularly well-prepared side kick.
 
I was quite sure I'd killed her and that the instructor was therefore going to Mortal Kombat my spine out, but she just got up laughing, gear having protected her.

This martial arts talk has reminded me of a return I processed while working at Amazon the other year. Bunch of handheld kick pads that got sent back by someone who taught kids. The reason they got sent back?

When one their students kicked one the first time a rectangular metal bar burst out the front edge and fell to the ground. The adult then tested another one themselves and once again a metal bar came out. They then more carefully examined a few more and noticed the metal bar in all of them was pressing against the material and stitching in a potentially dangerous spot.

The metal bar was probably in there to give them some rigidity, but fucking hell was it badly secured. There were about 8 of them that got sent back, all of them either ruptured by the bar or showing warning signs that they would rupture if used. I was genuinely horrified, someone could have gotten seriously hurt.
