So, in connection with trying to orient myself with the rental market, I've learned some new words! These are words that show up a lot on rental listings, specifically regarding how much rent you pay each month. As it turns out, translating words into what would be their English equivalent isn't always a good idea!

One such word is "Renovasjon". Literally translated, it means exactly what it looks like; "Renovation". It's not the act of renovating something however, as that's "Renovering", so it would be the noun form like "the new renovations in the west wing". So what does this mean when it says it's included in the rent? Are there renovations being done to the property that are being paid for via a monthly subscription?

No, that would be silly. Renovasjon means the garbage service.

Maybe it means "recycling service", as in "we'll renovate your junk into useful stuff"?

It's kind of weird that we need so many euphemisms for something so essential.

This is most likely where the phrase comes from, yeah. It's just something I've been scratching my head over for a while, heh.

In other rental listing news...

"Child-friendly apartment. Advise against having children in the apartment, due to the stairs." Uh... Okay.

To be fair though, the stairs do look pretty damn sketchy in the one picture that addresses them. My guess is that the lower level is child-friendly, but the Land Beyond the Stairs is verboten.

Also fun stuff: Someone registered a listing, provided pictures, set the price of rent (7500), indicated a floorplan size (30m2), set the security deposit (3 months), wrote down the address...

...and fucking none of it is useful for anything, because it's a listing of "we have several apartments available! A studio apartment on X street for 7500, a studio apartment on Y street for 8000, a 16m2 on Y street for 5500, and a 30m2 apartment on Z street with parking for 7500! Tell us about yourself and state which one you're interested in."

For as convenient as the 16m2 on Y street would be, I can't bring myself to condone this kind of absolutely bugfucked listing. There's 0 information about any of the specific apartments available (important stuff like "oh yeah, and we're NOT factoring communal/utility expenses into the rent, so that'll be 2500 extra each month on top of listed price", or even if any of them have been signed out already), and I have no way of knowing which pictures correspond to which location, so all 17 photos are completely worthless.

5500 kronor for 16 square meters? Y street must be the most convenient location ever, because that's a lot for such a small hole (at least by my vague memories of what the currency conversion rate is).

Norwegian Kroner, not Swedish Kronor. That's, like, a whole 8% difference!

Also, eh... That's honestly one of the cheapest listings on the market. Everything 20m2 or larger is at least 7500. Massive fuckin' housing bubble.

Google says its about a 1/10 ratio. It costs about 800 for a single-bedroom APT in an area you won't be shot in where I am in the US. So ykno, do your comparisons with that.

There's an apartment for 8000 that's located on a street named "Knife Alley". It seems nice.

But, unfortunately, Knife Alley is just a bit farther away from downtown than I'm looking for... Also, with the 31% income tax on my welfare payments, 8000 is still pricey enough that I need to thoughtfully consider if it's gonna be worth it.

Also, 1 to 10? It's 1 to 8.5 for NOK, and 1 to 1.08 for NOK to SEK. Make some quick cash by converting between the three!
