"Gender Expression" (ahem) is a thing "They learn" (see book) as they grow up.

Puppetry is a form of "expression", and this kind, is very much gender oriented.

I mean yeah, it's pretty obvious that kids ask me that because the most obvious gender flag in most places is long hair, but I kinda want to know what happens if I tell one of them that yes, that is the only one that matters and yes, I am definitely a woman. Do they just go "oh, okay" and then get weirded out later when they realise...? Would they question me again? Are the rest of the flags strong enough to overcome my glorious golden locks? It's one of those things where I have almost no idea what would happen, so the urge to poke it is strong.

I don't think it'd be good for the poor girl to be wandering around the church thinking I was female, though. Her folks would be mortified on her behalf.

Honestly, I don't think kids really care that much. They just ask things, and if they get an answer then it's "oh, okay" and then they go find some interesting dirt to touch.

That’s pretty much it. NB / trans people have said it as well. Kids really don’t care until they get old enough to start being told “this stuff is bad”.

We ended up chatting about hair for a few minutes later on, so I don't think she would have been that easily sidetracked. Maybe it makes a difference that my church is in a predominantly coloured (as in Cape Coloured, it's ~roughly an ethnic group) area and it's probably more common to see a woman with a shaved head than a man with long, un-dreaded hair. The answer to this specific question, pertaining to this specific girl, will remain shrouded in mystery forever.

I was briefly mistaken for a woman in my late teens/early 20's multiple times due to my long well-kept hair and fine features, by grown ass adults, in America.

People basically glance at you upon first meeting, certain cultural triggers associate you with a gender, and they go with it. I'd be surprised if kids didn't do that more often. They're still learning those cultural normalities, after all.
