I desperately hope not... My problem is that I've been shit at getting my stuff together and finding somewhere else to live, so I've cowed myself to keep things in line around here so she doesn't kick me out on the streets.

The plan is to get away from her and from here as soon as possible, but the logistics of actually doing that and not ending up in a worse situation have been difficult to organize. I'm not a particularly capable person, especially not with complicated and bureaucratic affairs like moving...

So the secondary plan is to try and keep my head down and steady until I'm strong enough to actually get out.

That's "formal rule" versus "informal rule of thumb". Commas are only supposed to be used in specific ways, but those overlap so much with "there should be a short pause here" that following the pause rule will mean you get it right 90% of the time.

The purpose of a comma is to indicate a short pause. If the natural way to say something includes a pause but the rules say you're not allowed to use a comma, that just means that the rules are wrong.

That is why the informal rule is usually enough. There are a few obscure or debated uses of a comma, but those are rare in general use.
