That sounds terribly unethical. I don't think I could lock a dog alone in a box for hours upon end just for 'training'. If that's the only way to house train it, I'd rather not get a dog at all.

Vinegar also works. Just throw vinegar in spots where you don't want the dog to urinate or poop. The smell will keep them away. Obviously works better on houses than apartments.

It is possible that the dog can get the message before that. Depends on how smart that dog is.

Instead of all this machivelian stuff just google how to do it.

It is an age-old problem with many solutions that do not involve flinging cooking supplies about the living room.

1. Crate training isn’t all that bad, but usually you want a bigger crate once they’re house-trained, as it ends up being a comfortable place for the dog who can feel “ownership” of their crate. If they start feeling overstimulated during a Christmas party, they can go hang out in their crate, and at that point it’s nice to leave them be, so the crate is a safe haven.

2. Stopping dogs from peeing and pooping places is as easy as praise and punishment. Every time they pee or poo on grass, a trigger word (usually ‘good boy/girl’) and a treat goes a long way. Then they learn where you like them to go. The tougher part is teaching them where you don’t like. If you’re not a hitter, it’s not really necessary. 90% of displeasure can be shown in body language and tone. They’re an instinctive animal, if your voice is low and slow, they assume you are growling at them. Just be sure they can link your displeasure to the offending item- once again the old “rub their face on it” really isn’t necessary.

In the seminar/course I took the lecturer dysded due to time constraints that I would do some sort of a test instead of lecture to get a grade

On the one hand I don't think I would have succeeded in that lecture, but on the other hand I feel like I am missing something.

Also I just realised: in over a year of living here (it's probably getting on for two years now actually) I have not once overheard my housemates (a couple) doing the nasty. Not complaining or anything, mind, but I figured that was just due to me being deaf but... well, I can certainly hear the guests going at it. >_>

Oh of course, it's a good thing (that would be awkward af), I'm just kinda puzzled as to how I haven't heard it if our walls are apparently so lacking in noise-insulation. Maybe it's just the guest room that has that trait, but the room that is currently the designated guest room used to be my housemates' room anyway.
