Yeah. Quarantining serves as a nice big "WE DID IT, REDDIT" when in reality, nothing major has changed. They will continue to post and possibly leak out elsewhere.

In general, Reddit's very style is encouraging of hugboxes, so it's very likely that the most "damaging" scenario is that they just make another board.

Quarantining is big kudos however if your whole shtick is about how the mainstream is oppressing you.

Poking around theredpill subreddit, there are some articles pointing out that the real problems started when r/incels got closed down, so then people from that sub started flooding other subs. The problem with that approach is that it leads ultimately into an us/them situation where you constantly need to close down subs, leading to a polarization of what is allowed to be discussed. Basically, with no incels subreddit of their own, any possible discussion of men's issues or men's perspectives will end up being flooded with incel comments and get shut down, leading to basically a void where there's no representative discussion of issues that affect half the population (unless it's a sanctioned discussion about men in a women's rights sub). The exact same thing would happen if you shut down every sub that had anti-male comments in it: those TERFs / Radfems and non-political but bitter "man-haters" would flood other feminist discussions, drowning out more mainstream and sensible feminists, and then the cycle would repeat since those subreddits now have the toxic comments you thought you got rid off by shutting down whichever subs you shut down first.

That's the problem with trying to ban the worst groups, those "worst" people start crowding out people in other discussions rather than sit in their corner. Prohibition doesn't work, for ideas or anything else. Shut down theredpill, and all that happens is people who have been diverted from posting there will post the same attitudes in some other place.

It's a relatively small community AFAIK. Big or medium ones like Bay12 can handle stagnation pretty much indefinitely. Small ones will eventually die without a steady flow of new members.

r/CringeAnarchy and r/FULLCOMMUNISM are both known for brigading, however, which is against the ToS. The former is basically an alt-right hugbox for laughing at liberals, minorities, and everything under the sun, while the latter is a wretched tankie hive that started as communist memes sub, but got radicalized into Stalin apologists' hugbox.

I don't know much about the other banned subs (I know only r/braincels, r/CA and r/FC) but I won't really miss them.

The latter, like all Reddit socialist boards, is also an extreme identity politics echo chamber. And it's a hugbox that can't keep within its containment area, as they have even attempted to brigade /r/dwarffortress for some bizarre tangential bigotry related thing. I can definitely see why the Reddit staff would not want to deal with such people.

To give you an idea of how identarian focused these boards are, 'idiot' and 'bitch' have and may still be permabannable offences for 'ableism' and 'misogyny'. Socialists who think that that such rules are stupid are banned, whereas non-socialists who agree with identity politics are allowed to post. So it's not even a socialist hugbox despite being a very strictly controlled socialist board, it's an identity politics hugbox. How this came to be, I have no idea.

Slightly confused by some of those moderator closing messages, like the one on the misogynist subreddits that provides "an example of positive masculinity" and then links to a book by Michael Kimmel. I'm not familiar with the name, but it seems to be a bit of a sticking point in the comments.

I'm sure the 911truth sub is also very pleased by having a government organization listed as the go-to source for correct information, heh... Kinda doubt that's going to sway any of the frequenters.

Just the law of how crowds work. Socialists won't push you out for not being socialists, however identity politics people will push you out for not supporting their identity politics. The regular push and pull of discourse then changes where the fault lines lie. Socialist vs non-Socialist just isn't a fault-line that's being policed, so it becomes irrelevant compared to those hot-button topics.

EDIT: one way that those lines can change is because often emotional reasoning beats out factual reasoning. For example, if you went to such a socialist forum and start arguing in favor of free-market economy, they're not going to dispassionately argue against you based on economic theory, they're going to retort that the free market is a smokescreen to hold down black people and women and support the conservative status quo, all of which are appeals to emotion that end up leading to identity politics, because those arguments are more effective at controlling the direction the discourse takes, than citing some more-factual analysis. Waving pitchforks to get rid of the wrongthinkers in our midst is always more effective than reasonable discussion. It's not a good thing, but it's true.

Friend hit up the group chat inviting folks around to help him drink various booze and then head into the city to some club or other, as a way of celebrating him completing some artwork he'd been working on for ages... nobody else seemed enthusiastic, so despite my intentions of staying in and basically not leaving my house unless absolutely necessary until next weekend, I expressed interest, had some dinner and changed out of my pyjamas.

Now I'm trying to confirm just where he plans on heading and where he wants to meet and... radio silence. Sheesh.
I'm not gonna march out into the cold until I actually know where I'm heading. I mean, I could just jump on a train and hope to receive word by the time I reach the city, but considering I didn't even intend to go out at all tonight I'm not exactly bursting with energy and motivation...
