Sure they do. They understand cause and effect well enough to escape cages to cross a room to eat other fish by causing short circuits by spitting saltwater at lights.

99.9% of the reason I don't eat them is on moral grounds. The .1 is that they're too rubbery to enjoy.

Handjob dolphin was an American experiment, actually. And he was basically sexually harassing his handler to the point where she started humoring him both in order to keep the experiment going (they were worried "conjugal visits" with other dolphins, which the also attempted, would potentially override the human imprinting that they were trying to achieve), and to keep him from violently assaulting her with his frustrations.

Then they started running out of time and the language learning wasn't going quickly enough, so she dropped LSD along with the dolphin in order to see how that worked out. Very scientific.


Also, both cows and chickens are capable of recognizing and forming bonds with individuals, both of their own and other species. Not necessarily with the most complex conversations (although chickens have been noted for having a larger vocabulary than one might originally suspect), but they're still very much thinking, feeling creatures.

They're also considerably less prone to gang-rape than dolphins are.


I'm actually allergic to octopus. Not squid, not any other shellfish, just octopus. It's very strange.

Octopus intelligence is really weird
 They think with their limbs, are extraordinarily fast-learning and intelligent, and get hit simultaneously by more kinds of cancer than Dark Souls PvP after one reproductive cycle.

As I understand it, a massive blockade of different genetic flaws that all hit at the same time and thus will never be evolved past is preventing one of the likeliest candidates for nonhuman intelligence from developing as much as it could.

Dude... I think you might have just found the answer to the Faroese not being able to produce enough food on their islands without fucking with other species.
I mean, migration to somewhere less-shitty and barren seems like the glaringly obvious solution, but if they for some reason they refuse to do that they could  always turn to cannibalism as a more ethical option.

A week or two ago, one of my coworkers was burgled. A neighbor's security system caught the burglar leaving her house with some property and strolling down to the local drug house with it. After this evidence was given to the police, the drug house was raided, leading to the burglar and several others being arrested. The non-arrested residents there must have decided that this was one raid too many, as they were witnessed moving out of the house yesterday evening.


Last night, the drug house exploded due to a fire that the authorities deem "suspicious". The most likely conclusion at this time is that somebody opened the gas lines before setting the place on fire.
