Aussie MP gets slammed for objectifying a woman.

Federal Greens MP Adam Bandt has been compared to Donald Trump for calling his wife, wait for it..."hot".

“With hot wife at Bangarra opening night of ‘Dark Emu’,” the post said.

The picture of the couple, a shoulders-up selfie, looked innocent enough, but Mr Bandt was accused of objectifying his wife in a sexist matter.

One comment on his post blasted the MP for “putting your wife out there for public consumption”.

Another comment said: “Poor judgment”.

“Women in the public eye are sexually objectified enough and you are alienating your progressive support base by contributing to that."

"Have a firm word with your social media adviser or hire one if you are in danger of misjudged Trumpish outbursts like this"

“Does your wife have a name? Is she only defined by her relationship to you and her perceived attractiveness? I thought we were better than this.”

This is like, Facebook levels of redesign fail.

Doesn't help that a bunch of archived posts/pages and whatnot just straight up refuse to load in the new version, so you're forced to switch back to "old" Reddit just to see anything.

I hope they're tracking how many visitors just immediately switch to old Reddit upon viewing a page, so they realize how little the changes are appreciated.

I'm sure they are tracking such things, and have a good idea how loathed it is. However, at the same time the redesign isn't for the good of the user experience in reddit, the purpose of the redesign is be able to fit more and better ads into reddit to make more money off of it. So ultimately the user experience is (at least to the people behind the redesign) not the point, and you know the saying: There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. With their pretty much unlimited analytical ability they'll be able to produce whatever statistics about user use that they need to convince themselves, and potentially others, that the new layout is actually more popular, despite whatever any third party statistics gathering tries to say, and then they'll eventually discontinue old reddit and try to force everyone to using the new one.

I am suddenly reminded of Slashdot's dubious flirtation with changing their layout, and how nearly 100% of the user base basically told them "No. Fix it or we are leaving" because it was broken assed shit that could not handle arbitrary display sizes, would mangle viewing of posts, did not load half the time, etc.

Slashdot's justification was "But it looks so OOOOOLLLD!!",  and the refrain was "If it isn't broken, dont try to fix it.  You know what *IS* broken? UNICODE-- FIX THAT instead!" 

Of course, they never fixed unicode support... But they did abandon their "Beta" UI layout project.

And they actually listened and changed it back??
I guess amazing business practices like *actually listening to feedback* might explain how they're still around after all this time.  They were basically Reddit before Reddit, but without the ability to create subreddits I guess.

If only Google-Youtube and other big sites would listen, but nooo, they have market researchers and UI experts who I'm sure have very nice degrees justifying their outright awful decisions.  And de-facto monopolies so people just deal with it.

People are sufficiently vain, that if a "Clone-o-mat 9000 Personal Cloning Machine!" ever hit the market, people would damned sure be producing Mini-Me versions of themselves, just for the selfie opportunities.

Man, I'm not exactly sure what I'd do with that option.  My mind went quickly to cloning *other* people to raise, then sorta snapped back.  I guess I might not use it, but I really don't know.

I've had a trend of dreams where I'm romantically involved with amazing, brilliant women, but asexually, and apparently allowed to flirt with hot men.  Not sure how I feel about that.  I know it's a "thing", but it feels like one of those hyper-specific things people claim just to look special, and would be emotionally tricky in real life.

Actually yes.  Here is an old post from way back in 2014 when they tried that shit, declaring their intent to do the redesign.  Note how they try so desperately to spindoctor the epic tidal-wave of "NO, DO NOT WANT" that crashed into their comment section with their editorial updates.

Given that the community of Slashdot tends to be old sysadmin neckbeards with the actual moxxie to pull off their threat (create a new slashdot-like meeting place, pack up, and move wholesale leaving the slashdot.org domain holders high and dry without a community), I expect that this outcome is the exception rather than the rule.  Reddit is populated with more.... Normies...  and nerds of ... Other... classifications, that are not typically aligned with actually carrying out an organized threat to return the favor for getting screwed like that.

Still, the whole "Oh yeah- You know the commentary system you have used since forever, and actually works? YEAH! WE DECIDED TO SCRAP IT WITHOUT CONSULTING YOU, AND REPLACE IT WITH FISCHER PRICE GARBAGE! ISN'T THAT GREAT!?" thing was well in effect with slashdot beta when it was forcibly instituted.

... of all the places I expected to find the old pair of crutches these people were looking for, "In a small tree" was not among them. Apparently they'd been sitting on something long enough for greenery to grow over them.

Why they were sitting out in open air as opposed to basically anywhere else, to the point that they ended up as something's impromptu trellis, I don't know.
