Currently debating whether or not to necro my LAmeripol thread to discuss the shitshow that is the current presidental elections here in Brasil. Dunno if there'd be interest though.

Someone drove into the store's parking lot yesterday and hit a roughly 3 or 4 foot tall, bright yellow painted stationary object fast enough to damage the car.  Today, according to risk management, they apparently want to sue.

Admittedly that object was a shopping cart, in the parking lot and from all appearances it has somehow found itself in the driving lane of the lot.  But everything in that first sentence is the truth as well (though I am suddenly stumped as to the height of the things).   Somebody recently wanted to sue the store for >almost< slipping last month next to a wet floor sign too.   Why is everyone sue happy lately?
Are you from USA? Isn't there the land of the sue-to-get-rich-schemes? I would think that would be fairly normal, from what media oozes from the North American culture, to sue for any excuse you have till you are rich, at least for the lazy assholes.

As Reelya pointed out, the "sue till you're rich" steretype is largely myth. Most "frivolous" lawsuits are actually either entirely justified or else fictional.

The stereotype exists primarily because Big Business has spent immense sums spreading disinformation in an attempt to build public support for lawsuit "reforms". This is because lawsuits are the primary tool for ordinary people to call businesses to account.

Why bother? The dystopian future is coming. If you're not a fan, don't have any children and die in the next 10-20 years.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

But will we be able to be Cyberpunks?

That's the really important question.

That's the important shit. The best part of living in a boring dystopia is the stakes are real, the steaks are soy, the synth is Finnish and we are trapped in the bellies of dying machines

It's probably worth it, I'm sure other nations will pop up in the news too. Those threads are worth keeping alive so that people know they're a thing if they feel like discussing the issues.

e.g. I just googled "colombia news" and the top story about fruit companies providing funding to far right death squads. Cheerful stuff.

So far in 2018 there have been at least 75 assassinations of human rights defenders in Colombia. To put the scale of that in perspective, in 2017 about 300 human rights activists were murdered worldwide. About 33% of all activist deaths per year are just in Colombia, despite the country only accounting for 0.65% of world population. This apparently isn't interesting enough to be newsworthy, probably because the government there are staunch right-wing USA supporting good ol' boys. If one activist was killed in China you'd hear more about that than the 100 or so killed per year in Colombia.

Yep, in Ecuador for example, the socialist president Correa got a lot of flak from the mainstream press. But Correa had a PhD in economics he gained in the USA, and the other candidate, supported by Bush & Co was a guy called Alvaro Noboa, who was apparently best known from his Amnesty International profile for using excessive amounts of child labor on his banana plantations, and using murder squads against striking workers. All I can say is that no matter what Correa didn't do 100% right, thank fucking Christ he won and the other guy didn't. Anybody is better than having your nation run by the richest guy who happens to be the child labor/death squad dude.

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?
My ship exploded midflight, but all the shrapnel totally landed on Alpha Centauri before anyone else did.  Bow before me world leaders!

Fruit is way less automated. Also needs resources like land and water, the snatching of which will produce more outcry.
