Did anyone see that Ghost in the Shell movie she whitewashed? I heard it was throughly mediocre so I didn’t bother

I'm not much of an anime person, so I didn't really have a reason to see it in the first place. Trailers looked appropriately dumb, I think a friend of mine might have seen it and confirmed that it was dumb as well, but it's not something I'd really remember.

Dunno if you can really blame her for whitewashing though. I mean, someone else came up with the idea for casting her in that role, and actually went through with it. No fucking clue why, except for the obvious plus of putting Scarlett Johansen into a skintight suit for a character with sexual overtones. But yeah.

It's hard for me to get mad when they put white people in anime movies because really most anime characters are not drawn with Japanese facial features. Even in a show like Ghost in the Shell where facial features are more detailed and right about every character is explicitly Japanese, they all look pretty white/neutral in terms of ethnicity.

So long as it doesn't bother the OG artist/creators of the work, it doesn't bother me.

The thing about Scar here is that she could have just said no. Nobody is forcing actors to take roles, especially if they're high profile like Scarlett. And with trans actors especially, Hollywood is kind of full of dickweeds - they'll happily cast a white cis whatever in whatever minority role, but if you're trans or a (racial or otherwise) minority and you try for a cis or white role, you're "not a good fit" for the character. So if you're a trans actor, trans roles are kind of your bread and butter - having someone come in and take that from you too is kind of like the guy with 37 presents getting pissed at you getting one that he didn't.

This is all generalities of course - Scarlett is mostly just a lightning rod for a systematic problem with Hollywood being, again, full of dickweeds.

Call me an asshole but I am having a hard time thinking of major trans characters in movies whose roles were given to a white man.

Which ones were you thinking of, I am legit curious here.

Er, no. A trans man is a man. That's why it's called a Trans MAN. And in fact, that's part of the problem; having women play trans men and men play trans women just reinforces the stereotype that trans people are just cross-dressing or playing dress-up, that they're not ACTUALLY men and women but just "a woman in flannel" or "a guy in a dress." So that's not helpful either.

(not to mention that, in my opinion at least, I wouldn't doubt that casting directors do that because they want the character to be "obviously" trans. So if a trans person auditions for the role but doesn't actually look like a man in a dress but looks like any cis woman, the director is gonna think "this won't be believable!" because they stereotype (or think the audience stereotypes) that all trans women are square-jawed five o'clock shadow rectangular men in dresses, and won't believe that this person is actually a trans character. Despite being played by a trans person. Same stereotyping applies to trans men too.)

And I mean, it'd be great if your trans or nottrans status didn't matter for getting roles. But like I said, if you're a trans actor, you're very VERY lucky to get cast in non-trans roles; you're typecast already just by being trans. So having a cis person take a trans role is taking the only roles that anyone's actually letting you have away from you. That's why it's a dick move.

Tambor won the Golden Globe and Emmy for his role in Transparent. Huffman was nominated for an Oscar for Transamerica, and Leto won for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Ah, my mistake. I can never remember whether a trans man is meant to be male or female.

Anyway, that being the case, whether Scarlett is trans or not should not matter. There is no third trans caste. There is only male or female.

I already said twice why it matters, I'm not gonna write the same thing a third time just to be ignored. I mean, yes, ideally it shouldn't matter, but we don't live in an ideal world, do we?

As for remembering; it's simple. Chop off the "trans" bit, and that's what they are. A trans person is going to identify (and label) as what they're going TO, not what they're coming FROM. That's the whole point, after all.

For the most part, at least. People are people and individuals and such. But if some person says "I'm a trans man" chances are 99.9% they're a man.

I'm vaguely reminded of something I read once about straight men that are professional gay pornstars. They could be hetero pornstars, but being in gay pornos is more lucrative, was what the gist of it was IIRC.

Yeah, that's a thing. "Gay for Pay" it's called. I'm not sure how prevalent it is.

"Seduce the straight man," where they don't pretend to be gay like with "gay for pay" but are seduced into gay sex by someone, is also a fairly large sub-genre of gay porn... For... some reason. I don't get it, myself. But then, I also don't get watersports, so whatever.

People who want to be some non-existent "gender" are more likely to be some sort of middle-class try-hards rather than actual people with gender dysmorphia. The problem happens when something like that becomes trendy, then you get douchebags going on about being nano-gender or pico-gender just so they can claim to have a slice of that pie - note that it's almost always white middle class ppl who claim to be those weird "pico" genders and having "demi" sexuality. e.g. boring urban cis people jumping on the bandwagon with just one toe.

"Demisexual" is the clearest bullshit. It's a way for otherwise completely uninteresting people to claim they have a queer sexuality and/or gender identity when they clearly do not. "demisexual" means you only sleep with people you're really into. Hang on, isn't that just called old-fashioned regular dating? We used to (still do) just call that "not being slutty". "Not being slutty" is a marginalized sexual/gender identity now, it seems, on par with the oppression faced by gays and transgender people! I say that demisexuals are uninteresting people here quite confidently, on the basis that anyone who was in fact legit interesting wouldn't feel the need to crap on about how they're demisexual.
