Per "natural" and "artificial", the difference is whether or not it was sourced from crude oil derivatives. So yes, completely safe to eat, but 100% synthesized from hydrocarbons pulled from the depths of the earth is artificial, while literally anything lying around, even if chemically treated, is natural.

What exactly is a safe-to-eat hydrocarbon derivative? I mean, I get the weirdness of the definition, I'm just drawing a blank for edible petroleum products.

My bad, I have no clue where I pulled that from. Here's the UK food law definition of natural

Quote
A flavouring substance (or flavouring substances) which is (or are) obtained, by physical, enzymatic, or microbiological processes, from material of vegetable or animal origin which material is either raw or has been subjected to a process normally used in preparing food for human consumption and to no process other than one normally so used

... y'know, just today I was thinking about the old SNES elemental lords super robot wars side story. Just now checked to see if translation efforts had gotten anywhere since the last time I checked. Turns out AGTP came back from the dead again and released a finished translation over a month ago. Welp.

All this talk about spicy food is making me hungry, but I don't think I really have time for a decent breakfast this morning. :(

My housemate was weirded out to see me snacking on raw onion a while back, if that counts. I don't know if I would eat an entire one like an apple - I'm not as cool as our former PM. Also, wasteful...

...I conceded defeat and resolved to always make sure the restaurant catered to the palate of my country before ordering spicy foreign food. I can handle our mouth-burners, but god damn I cannot handle theirs.
Dude, no! You've just got to train yourself. I remember sweating furiously in some little restaurant I found above an Indian grocery store, fighting my way through some sort of chaat dish (I think) shortly after discovering my appreciation for spicy food.
Nowadays I would probably blitz through whatever-it-was and order another.

There are different kinds of spicy, also - I can eat plenty of super-hot Mexican and Indian dishes, but a proper serving of wasabi (as opposed to the delicious wasabi peas I often snack on, which are still hot but in a nice way) would probably knock me on my arse.
I'm sure Asian cuisine has plenty more tangy tricks up its embroidered silken sleeve, too.

I enjoy the stereotypical chinese/japanese reliance on horseradish for it's very strong flavors. Clears the sinuses.
