Ugh. My dad used to be a small-time dairy farmer.

Trust me, the cows were content. Then it became completely impossible to support economically, so he does beef. He's been doing it a long time now; still breaks him up though. Too bad there's no money in milk.

Doesn't help that supermarkets want to keep milk ultra-cheap.

Thing is that artesanal or traditional farming can't really compete with large, industrialized operations but in some special conditions.

They can compete in the high end area. As a society I think it really depends on what the objective is what is better. If your objective is to produce the most product at the least cost for the producer then it does win out. If your objective is to balance sustainability, ethics, externalities, and need then industrialized is not the best setup and neither would be totally small scale farms.

I finally found out why my housemate thought he could drive a manual, yet had no idea what my car's clutch pedal was.  He wasn't fibbing, it's just that his former car was an automatic with a "manual" mode, activated by switch.  No clutch, but it followed the 1/2/3 "gear" positions better or something.

I'd say "kids these days" except the thing was from '94, had about 10 years on my own car.  And I had no idea that that toggle was a thing.  Stick shift for life~
though hybrids or continuous clutches are basically better now

A new challenger approaches!

Not eating meat and not dying is easy.
I don't eat dairy or meat and I'm fine.
I eat the food I grow and lick moss off my cultivated rock.
It contains a few molds and fungi that provides me with enough chemicals to fall into a coma to conserve my energy.
I usually wake up with a wild potato or three within my reach and like a crocodile I death roll them into submission.
Afterwards I have enough energy to get some Burger king

I did legitimately consider buying a manual transmission car somewhat recently because I know how to drive a real stick shift, and I was predicting there are much lower odds my car would be successfully stolen in a zombie apocalypse situation.  I don't have any statistics or anything but I'm guessing in america the number of adults under 40 able to drive a stick is tiny.

Shit damn it is cold. My nipples are like fire hydrants!

I am not a vegan. I do not feel sympathy for meat on legs.
You include humans in that assessment?

No, you are a fungi. :))

@Maximum Spin: there's no way for a commercially-viable dairy to be anywhere approaching cruelty-free, I'm afraid - even if you don't consider keeping critters captive to produce milk cruel in and of itself.

Fakeedit: I just came in here to comment on my erect nipples, and yet I've ended up typing a whole big thing. At least it's taken my mind off how cold it is.

Looking up my account balance, the website decided to default to Spanish for some reason.

Also, did the price of RAM jump up recently? Looking to fill the two empty slots in my motherboard, and the prices I'm seeing are more than twice what I remember paying for the same memory boards. PRE-EDIT: Actually, I can't seem to find the same model RAM I've got, so I'd probably have to replace the ones I've got if I wanted to upgrade.

PRE-EDIT2: Wait, I looked it up on Amazon based on information I got from the CPU-Z utility. Found a similar, if not(but probably not) the same model... and recommendations for gay erotica. Glad I was searching first with my browser in incognito mode, and not signed into Amazon.

And then of course there's the separation of calves from their mothers at birth. Even at dairies where the male calves aren't promptly slaughtered, taking calves of either sex from their parent is extremely upsetting for both parties. That's probably the "mooing" you say you hear some nights, in fact - must be calving time. :'(
Although, you'd be surprised at how often the mother simply abandons the calf and doesn't give a damn.

Now that I have you here as the local bovine expert: I've noticed weird differences between cow meat and milk in the continent, in Great Britain, and in Ireland.

When I was in London 2 years ago the milk tasted weird to me. Something between "grass" and "paint" in taste, and yes I know thats a weird analogy. Anyway it tasted strange and I know it wasnt just me because a friend of mine told me the same thing.

Anyhow, fastforward a year and I arrive to Ireland, and the milk, once again, tastes different. In particular: it seems to me that it's far thicker than I'd expect and it tastes almost sour. It's different from both continental milk and Great Britain's milk. Moreover, I find that meat is also fattier than I would expect.

Is there any difference in the breeds involved?
