"So listen to me," says the commercial less explicitly, "and buy this shiny and reflective strip of plastic to stick in front of your eyes! I'm sure someone out there needs something to aim at."

Person, I'm starting to suspect you either weren't actually special ops, or you're being paid to say stuff you know is bullshit. Or weren't involved in field work all that much.

Is that honestly what the commercial said?

That first line is word for word, yes. At the most it's mildly off with specific word order.

As for the product, it's sunglasses with some anti-glare treatment, insofar as I bothered to actually pay attention to what the hell they were shilling. Maybe some impact resistance? Hard to say without watching it again and trying to pay attention to what's being said, and I'd really kinda' rather not. They're a twenty buck pair of infomercial sunglasses.

Frumple reiterates: Infomercial sunglasses. You can pretty much always find cheaper than infomercial anything. There's little doubt they're both a ripoff and indulging in so much puffery they could hold a side job as a fluffer.

As for how long, I'unno. Pretty sure I've been occasionally walking by the thing for a least a month, probably two. It's running on GRIT, which one of the other folks in the house has on most of the day.

As Americans we've always fetished our weapons, soldiers and combat. It's just after 9/11 (it feels to me anyways), the shit got turned up to 11. Then a couple years later it settled down around 9.5. The Weekend Warrior market has been around forever, it's just morphed slightly from good ol' hunting camo vests to tacticool accessories to spice up that civilian existence, put the right "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" twist on the AR-15 you keep to protect your family from....things.

I imagine the market for it has progressed far enough and production costs have fallen far enough that it can be profitable to market to the completely uninformed consumer now. It's kind of that pervasive.

For what it's worth, the commercial in question does have this gimmick thing that looks blatantly fake with a white screen that supposedly only shows a picture of a bald eagle in front of an american flag when looked at with these special (twenty buck infomercial) sunglasses, but not other sunglasses. So you got yer murrica fuck yeah.

Sadly, they dropped a ball and the eagle isn't crying, though.

See, my perspective is slightly different. My family has been in the same house for four to five hundred years*, though granted only one small muddy wall remains of that, and it's only visible in the attic. So, I suppose, being British for me means deep rooted family connections. I didn't make this farmhouse, but my ancestors did. The oak tree planted out front was planted by my great great grandfather, and so forth. I feel something similar for the nation as a whole. I didn't make it, but my people did, and I take pride in that.

* Not sure on exact date. My dad's something of a genealogist, though, and has traced it back fairly accurately.
