What I think it boils down to is that she's claiming that if you want chocolate, then just think about chocolate, believe you'll get chocolate, and then people are more likely to give you chocolate because of quantum mechanics.

But you can clearly see that it's junk science similar to psychics. You're bound to get some chocolate at some point, so you can then turn around and say "see? the secret works!"
Well, most people tend to be perpetual victims, thrashing in the surf of a cosmic sea as its current drags them from one misery to another. Can you blame them for wanting to feel as though they have any real agency?

Kudos to the author of those shitty books for cashing in on their unhappy feelings of powerlessness so effectively. Man, come to think of it, being a crackpot self-help author could be quite a lucrative (not to mention easy) career if one knew which buzzwords to pepper their writings with... perhaps I should head to the library, in search of a self-help book on writing self-help books.

It's actually a fun thought experiment applying The Secret logic to different things.

Quote
The most common thought that people hold, and I held it too, is that food was responsible for my weight gain. That is a belief that does not serve you, and in my mind now it is complete balderdash! Food is not responsible for putting on weight. It is your thought that food is responsible for putting on weight that actually has food put on weight. Remember, thoughts are primary cause of everything, and the rest is effects from those thoughts. Think perfect thoughts and the result must be perfect weight. Let go of all those limiting thoughts. Food cannot cause you to put on weight, unless you think it can.

So ... working out cannot cause you to gain muscle, unless you think it can. Except, my muscle gain from working out has been less than I expected. Instead of working how however, I was supposed to just think muscly thoughts.

The Secret is in fact going past narcissism, and bumping up against metaphysical solipsism. e.g. if you think thin thoughts to get thin, then what about all the other people who's belief is that you are really fat. Why don't their beliefs count in that circumstance?

However we can apply this to politics. If we all believe that Trump has already been impeached, then it's sure to be true.

I just spent a considerable chunk of time typing the majority of the HTTP status codes, one after another...

I kinda like 403...

(just open the image in a new tab, and change the URL to any numeric status code you like.)

That caused me to look up http error codes.  I am amused by code 418.  Considering there are wifi refrigerators now, I wonder how long it will be til someone makes a web interface teapot that allows you to prepare tea via cellphone on your way home from work, that legit uses that code.

Error code 418, I'm sorry dave, coffee is not possible.

WTF are you talking about, I have a rich and fulfilling social life and spend the entire two-day period partying wildly, with no time to waste sitting around staring into the depths of the internet for hours on end in the hopes of finding something to give meaning to my existence (or at least cute cat videos), obviously.

People were talking about the bloody Secret and I feel like I have a duty to point out that the Chaser's War on Everything did a segment on it.

I believe that Nietzsche pioneered the concept behind The Secret, through his Will to Power concept.

You may be mistaking it for something else. Will to Power is a why, not a how. I haven't read that much of Nietzsche's work, but I'd describe it as the force that makes people ambitious and wanting for more. Not any kind of force to fulfill those ambitions and wants that The Secret purports to be.

As someone mentioned before, it always bothered me with this hodunk (and other bits of esoterica, did a little reading) that it more or less ignores the will or action of other people- never acknowledging that seven billion other people have wills, beliefs, flights of passion, desires, and totally ignores the sheer maelstrom you'd be working against if there was something to it.

That's why it's a secret, sssshhh, I've let you in on it but don't tell the rest of the sheeply, they can't know, it'll ruin everything.

After thinking about this some more I love how you could make the idea super defensible if you backpaddle to it being metaphorical (ie "think less fat thoughts" doesn't equal literally thinking "I'm losing weight I'm losing weight I'm losing weight" but thinking "I'm not going to have another sandwich today" or "I'm going to go the gym today"), which basically makes it just generic cognitive motivational stuff, if anyone is called into question on believing these things. Perfect defensive position.
