chloramine is overrated. As long as you dont bend your head over it and huff, you will be fine. The decomposition of the proteins in the hair produces some ammonia, but not enough to really be afraid of. Most of the gas produced is steam, and carbon dioxide.

Except that boiling bleach produces chlorine gas, which can easily cause permanent damage to your lungs.

Don't boil bleach.

Also, weird, maybe don't spout off about chemistry you don't understand when it can get people hurt?

No... bleach is hypochlorite, not HCL in solution. To heat the bleach hot enough to dissociate the chlorine that way, would require temperatures higher than 100c.

(here is a nice informative site on the chemistry of thermal decomposition of hypochlorite.)
http://www.powellfab.com/technical_information/sodium_hypochlorite/decomposition_reason.aspx

It turns into either saltwater and oxygen, or into salt water, and sodium chlorite.

Instead, it makes it more readily combine with amine groups found in the hair, forming chloramines. Just ventilate the room, and dont huff it.

back at 'ya buddy. To dissociate the chlorine thermally, in the absence of a reactant (like an acid), would require heating it well beyond the boiling point.

Chloramines are nasty, and can be very bad for you, (and are the primary thing produced when you stupidly mix bleach and ammonia), however, they are also released when you use bleach to clean up organic messes, like blood, feces, or dry urine. This includes substances like hair.  The normal use of bleach as a cleanser will release chloramine when it is used in this context. Heating it causes the reaction to be more ... energetic... and rate of release is hgher.  With ventillation, it is not that big a deal.

If you were somehow stupid enough to mix it with an acid, then the dissociated hydronium ions in the water will first reduce the hypo's oxygen, to make more water-- then would reduce the chlorite component further, producing various things, including HCl gas, depending on how strong the acid was.

We should already know not to mix household bleach with mysterious cleansers that contain acids, especially when we have turned up the reactivity by making it hot.

Just getting the bleach hot though? Does not make make either free chlorine dimer (Cl2), or hydrochloric acid vapor (HCl). It increases the rate of normal decomposition of the hypo into salt water, oxygen, and chlorite. Nothing else, at least not while still aqueous.

Yes, it would. 101 C, actually. That's slightly below the boiling point of bleach.

Here is an actual scientific paper on what happens when you decompose sodium hypochlorite thermally: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/j150327a013

Your nice informative site fails to mention that it's describing the decomposition at low temperatures, which are more relevant for storage. Boiling it does release chlorine gas.

Paywalled bro.

But let's dissect the claim a bit--  The energy needed to break the chlorine away from the hydrogen it is involved with is attained at 1500 degrees Celsius. You are NOT going to get "chlorine gas" from boiling an aqueous solution. The water will evaporate, turning into a cloud of hydrochloric acid (HCl), and water vapor, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG before then.

The other major associated anion is sodium. Sodium chloride has a MELTING point of 800c. Needless to say, boiling saltwater does precisely "shit" toward releasing chlorine gas, even though as an ionic compound, it totally dissociates freely in aqueous solution. The bond energy of the chloride ion is ABSURDLY high.

Looking at your paper's abstract suggests the presence of a metallic catalyst, which is apples and oranges. Metallic catalysts are the LAST thing a bleach maker will want in their product, and certainly will not be present when poured straight from the bottle into the glass measuring cup.

Wikipedia mentions that its (sodium hypo) boiling point is indeed 101C, and that it decomposes. What they mean is that at that temperature, it breaks down very readily into saltwater, oxygen, and sodium chlorite.  The latter thermally decomposes between 180C and 200C-- Again-- *MUCH HOTTER THAN WATER BOILING.

In Krasnodar, Russia, a married couple has been arrested under suspicion of murdering and eating 30 people.
According to the Russian media, Dimitri Baksjeev (35), and his wife Natalja (42) have confessed to their crimes.

The police announced their arrest yesterday. The husband was suspected of brutally murdering a drunk woman in an abandoned house on the military academy grounds, where the couple resided, and to have cut the body into pieces.
Local construction workers had found the man's telephone on the site, with horrible pictures on it of Dimitri posing with body parts in his mouth.

When the police consequently searched the couple's house, they found pickled meats in jars, and as of yet unidentified meat in the kitchen.

Local media already dubbed it a serial cannibalism case, but the police do not want to take it that far yet, at least not until the meat has been identified as human.

It is possible that some of the murders already took place 20 years ago. In the couple's appartment, photos were found from 1999, showing a decapitated head served on a plate with various fruits.

Pieces of skin were also found in the appartment.

Heh, 20 years ago the guy was 15.

Wow, I never knew the Russian culture was so tolerant of cannibalism.

Anyway holy fuck, those two are at full-blown Namira worshiper levels of cannibalism. Getting away with 30 murders...it really shows how people generally only murder those they're connected to. You could never get away with that many, even more than one, if they weren't total strangers.

So, right now, as I post this, a FedEx truck is stuck in our driveway, and it is very awkward. I hope we never get mail on a rainy day again.

What do you believe the appropriate reaction is in this circumstance? What am I supposed to, I dunno, do?

Go out there and help the truck by looking around corners for it and guiding it with hand signals?

I work for one of their competitors, can advise.

If they are broke down, he ought to have contacted his home base by now. They or he should have arranged a tow truck or otherwise arranged for that thing to be repaired/moved.

You should contact the local office to see what is being done and within what timeframe. Usually they are very quick about it, since a stopped delivery vehicle means packages are being delayed. With those giant FedEx trucks, that can be a LOT of packages.

I think that's basically what's happening right now. He's just sorta waiting in the truck. He made some calls for something, but other than that I'm not sure.

You're good then. They'll have him out of there as soon as possible, I'm sure. I get calls like that all the time, it happens more than you might think.

Unfortunately it may be some time before anyone can arrive to assist, depending on how busy the local rescue services are. Best of luck.
