Pandas make the best Nazis. We're so cute you almost forget we're murdering millions.

Nah, pandas are kinda pointless.

Just because you know how it works doesn't make it not magic. A Wizard is just a person who knows how their magic works, as opposed to the sorcerer who does not.

That's the DND interpretation.  Wizards are based on intelligence, sorcerers on *charisma*.
Beyond that:  Wizards study their notes *every day* to temporarily LEARN spells, which they then recite and forget.  Sorcerers have a few very specific spells written into their souls, and can have certain wells of ego-energy with which to cast them.

Even in Pratchett's universe, the sorcerer was... a bit of an aberration.  Instead of calling energy from the world, it generated magical energy, and the implications were, ahem, problematic.

The sourceror makes new and exciting magics too.

Also, they try to take over the world and enforce their own view on everyone with the potential for massive death and destruction as magic users try to show they're better than the rest by killing each other.

...

How the actual fuck did someone ninja me on that one.

I suppose more accurately, a wizard is a person who understands magic and a sorcerer is a person who has magic inside of them. Those aren't quite mutually exclusive, but both neatly explain why they can use magic. Someone who both is a source of magic and totally understands how it works would be quite powerful indeed.

More more accurately, they're synonyms that only have meaning more distinct than magic user depending on the author's whims :P

... also from what I recall dual class wizard/sorcerers tended to be kinda'... not that great. Probably more a detriment than boon in most builds, D&D wise.

But "magic user" is such a boring term, no? :P
Wizard, Witch, Warlock, Sorcerer, Mage. Magic is too important to be so imprecise!

(nod)
To build on my DND interpretation, both wizards and sorcerers cast the *exact same spells*.  Even *bards* cast mostly a subset of those "arcane" spells, also via charisma, literally via playing their instruments.

Wizards just have the ability to scribe and "know" any arcane spell.  Whereas sorcerers can have *any* arcane spell inscribed in their very being, and express it with relative ease, but will never have the adaptability of a wizard.

Hence why every wizard must be well prepared.  They have more options, but must choose of options ahead of time.  They need, more than most, to know what is going to happen hence scrying...  And hired adventurers, heh.

A sorcerer is just dangerous.

In 3.5e at least, that's quite true. Wizards and Sorcerers had identical spell lists, so all multiclassing the two did was slow down spell progression (getting higher spell levels more slowly) and having two completely separate sets of spell slots, one of which (the sorcerer slots) could be used for only a small portion of the spells available to you.

If you got both classes to 9th-level spells, then you'd have some serious power and flexibility - except that that would take you into the Epic level range.
