So I guess nowadays everyone in Turkey that wants to open a new bank account first spends a few thousand dollars on private investigators to make sure no one at the bank they're planning on using ever spoke out against the Sultan, just to be safe.

I know the suspicion started right after the coup, it's just reaching new levels of absurdity. It's like McCarthyism on steroids. I suppose people eating (or just happen to be eating) Gulens favorite foods will at some point be labelled gulenists.

Geography education in the U.S. is definitely terrible. I knew someone in high school who thought Africa was a country, and another who didn't know that the UK is an island across from France. U.S. states receive more focus than foreign countries, but even that is kind of vague. As far as I can remember the closest we ever got to labeling a world map was filling out a map of South America for Spanish class.

I'm mostly only good with geography because I play way too many Paradox games and have spent considerable amounts of time staring at modern maps for fun as a result.

To be fair, modern African political boundaries look like a map of the midwestern U.S. had a baby with an internal political map of the Holy Roman Empire because 19-century colonizers didn't pay any attention to cultural boundaries.

I was educated here in USA on geography and I can locate pretty much any country on Earth. I might get some little fiddly ones like Kazakhstan and stuff mixed up mind you. Also I can give general descriptions of the biomes in most of them.

they teach how to read maps

This was PE class for me. Orienteering was and is fun, though the rules say you can't go alone into the woods, and almost every time I ended up with someone particularly lazy as my partner.

I should specify that I meant "this symbol means post office, this is a church" kinda map reading, as opposed to "this is how maps work".

I remember orienteering in primary school, prior to the various specialised classes in high school, which we first did in the local park, and then a trip out to the local country park. I don't like being outside, but I did rather enjoy orienteering.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most (if not all) countries in the world have some debt? America might have the most but it's hardly the only nation with national debt.
