I'm glad at least Tack stepped in to speak some sense, these anti-gun lunatics often make me embarrassed to be Australian.

Fakeedit: nope, this is the WTF thread, you're in the right place for confusion.

MFP: No it does not say 0.09% read the article:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828709/

Quote
Results. Gun ownership was a significant predictor of firearm homicide rates (incidence rate ratio = 1.009; 95% confidence interval = 1.004, 1.014). This model indicated that for each percentage point increase in gun ownership, the firearm homicide rate increased by 0.9%.

1.01 would be 101%
1.009 is in fact ... 100% + 0.9%

~~~
Dude, have you seen how hard UK criminals have it trying to get guns?
This argument is worn out. There's ample data suggesting that reducing gun availability reduces all levels of gun-related accidents, crimes, homicide and suicides. We have more than one country that can be looked at, and different countries have in fact reduced gun ownership in the past, and we can in fact test what you just wrote by looking at various nations to see how such laws fared.
It's a theory put forward by gun owners that "gun control does next to nothing to stop criminals from getting their hands on guns".
that theory is in fact, complete bullshit, not a fact.
I was just talking about blowing things out of proportion.
That was a typo. It's fixed now.
And again. Yeah, no one is saying that a place with 0 guns wouldn't have 0 gun crimes. Sky is blue too, don't need to tell me.
It comes up from time to time in the Ameripol thread since it's a problem in the US, but I don't think theres a thread specifically about gun control.
Well there's a WTF, no gun control thread. Seems to be a rather controversial topic.
Eh.
The point was that each 1% more guns in the community increases homicides by almost exactly 1% as well. So there's a direct linear relationship between ownership rates and murder. Homicide rate in the USA is 4-5 times that of anywhere in europe. It is in fact a big deal, and it's entirely driven by lax gun availability.
it's not just "1% of homicides" it's "1% more homicides for every 1% of gun ownership". 0.9% actually, which implies that 90% of homicides are related directly to gun availability. And ... given that homicide rates in Europe are 80+% lower, it's probably dead accurate. Gun ownership in the USA explains and is responsible for around 90% of homicides.
UK has a pretty similar culture, similar issues, race tensions, similar spread of rich and poor, and their homicide rate is 0.92 / 100K compared to the USA's 4.88 / 100K. The main difference is gun availability. 82% lower homicide rate in the UK vs USA. This fits well with the findings that on a per-state basis in the USA, gun ownership explains 90% of the variation in the homicide rate.
How do you get around the second amendment though? I don't think any other countries (except maybe Finland) have anything remotely like that.
How many times do I need to correct you?
It says 1% more guns = .9% more GUN crime. No. Duh.
No, it isn't.
Lastly, we were talking about the NRA's ad.
FancyPants - YOU. ARE WRONG. AGAIN. Read the fucking article. i quoted the exact thing.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828709/
Clearly, it states homicide in the article I've linked and quoted for you three times now! Jeez, this is like debating a creationist. Sheesh.
What next? Are you going to tell me the article was about knives and not guns? I have stated exactly what the research says from the start. You're just derailing with nonsense that contradicts what's in the text. you're repeatedly attacking me for "misquoting" shit, when you are the one doing that, repeatedly.
I stand by what i said, because it's what the research says.
It's annoying though. how many times do i have to cite the same damn thing and be told it says something different to what it clearly states? it's like being "gaslighted".
A million times!
Mind you the article you posted takes place in the USA, which means Hillary Clinton wrote it... or Obama.
Which because Hillary Clinton wrote it, means she is probably the one who killed those extra people! it is a conspiracy!
MAN I wish my parody was less crazy then what is actually being said.
