Greece can be mostly explained by the following analogy: A person has a ton of debts. They win the lottery. Instead of paying those debts, they buy an expensive car.

Greece also had huge public expenditure on stuff that one would consider superflous, such as a fuckhuge workforce of very well paid public officials that did almost nothing. Everyone knew it would eventualy fall into huge debt, but the elected officials refused to do anything about it since doing so would hurt their party's (and their own) image.

That's so reductionist I'm getting angry. Greece was pretty much goaded into the current situation. In part their politicians are to blame, but so is the EU as a whole, which played along, and the banking institutions that actually made all this shit happen and profitted from it.  Some people were several of these at once, funnily enough.

I feel like it should be mentioned that a conversation has gone from Men's Rights, to Poverty & Equality and now politics without the thread spiralling out of control.
I feel like this hasn't happened in years.

I'd argue that its because a good deal of the discussions came up during the average bedtime of most lower forumites, so people just kinda went to bed instead of bringing the discussion to some sort of boiling point :U
