I know a guy that wound up losing his job after a shooting where a grand jury needed all of five minutes to clear him of any wrongdoing - he couldn't afford bail (not even the percentage a bail bondsman would require) and missed too much work between his arrest and the grand jury convening.

Now, this might not be an ideal form of such insurance, and there might be crocks in it, but attacking it for not covering negligent discharge or malfunction misses the point completely.

Yeah, I'm all for insurance that would cover the monetary costs from the legal system, theres nothing controversial about that. What I'm wondering though is, would it be restricted to NRA members only or available to anybody? Making it restricted to NRA members only makes it look like a ploy to expand membership, despite whatever their intentions are.

I feel there are some ethical issues with a pro-gun organization providing insurance for people which I imagine will make it easier for them to prove they shot someone within the law, but I'm also quite biased when it comes to gun control.

Not that I'm opposed to the NRA.  Gun rights is one of the issues I'm not... *hard* left on.
I don't agree with some of the things they do, but you can't completely please everybody.

Ideally, everyone would have infinite legal representation.  The NRA feels that people acting in self defense or home defense deserve proper representation.  Public defenders are obviously overbooked, despite their heroic and selfless efforts.
