My windows defender is displaying a "device health" problem.

The problem is that my brightness is at maximum.

My brightness is no longer at maximum.

The device health problem persists.

Keep up, Windows 10!

You're meant to send the dominatrix away, man /hohohohohohoho
Believe me, I'd've rather woken up to that than gastrointestinal turmoil.
You're meant to send the bears away, man /hohohohohohoho

You can have those Gummi Bears gift wrapped.

May the gods have mercy on the receiver of that gift.

I don't think Dawkins was that important to begin with  tbh. He's far more famous for his views on religion and the lack of thereof thann anything else, I think

Those views may be what he's famous for, but he did do some genuinely useful work before he became an arrogant, condescending piece of shit.

Did you big sky daddy tell you to say that ;)

It is rather the shame. I know quite little of Richard Dawkins, but I have read some of his works and seen him in interviews. He seems to be as a kind, clever and good man. His worse excesses are simply unworthy of him, or ought to be.

Of course, I imagine that maintaining the image is part of it all. That, and the simple truth that nothing can be quite as immovable as a clever mind that knows that it is clever.

Why, goodness me, Dysentery Bears®! I can think of a few occasions where they could come in handy. Indeed, I might buy a few sacks of them some day, find the active ingredient, refine it and become a biological weapons power, like I have always wanted.

I prefer to do most of my shopping in physical stores whenever possible, so long as they have something close to what I want and the price is close enough to what I would pay online. This is particularly true for electronics, as I would rather not risk the package being lost in transit or stolen before I get to it. Particularly since Best Buy set up one-click price-matching (they have buttons at their terminals to check "what is Amazon/Newegg/ect. charging for this exact product, so as long as you ask for the price match in the first place it is fairly painless), the primary downside becomes the more limited selection available. I had to buy a video card yesterday due to my aging 560 having a sudden and spectacular critical existence failure, so I found a nice 1060 (I was holding out until I could afford a 1070 or 1080, but that didn't work out) priced at $299 at Best Buy and searched Newegg for a price match. I expected to be paying around $275-$280 for it, because that is the usual difference in price.

The card was retailing for $249.99 online. It took the customer service rep a considerable time to match it, because he was absolutely convinced that it wasn't matching to the exact same model (which I can't blame him for - price-matching to a comparable but not identical product can land them in very hot water) due to the huge difference in price.

I have that. I thought it was because of hooking my laptop into an external monitor. Guess it's just Windows being Windows.

E: the 1060, which I just got for my first computer build, cost me about 400 (in USD). 540 in CAD. Plus tax.

That was one of the cheaper versions.

*fists shakes at import costs*

Double E: Wait, no, I got the 1070. Alright then, I stop complaining now.

I love how leaving it on max brightness is now somehow a device health problem.

Shouldnt that warning be reserved for things like, I dunno.. Failing Batteries? Things that can actually, you know, catch fire and explode from poor health? Oh, or maybe the hard drive throwing SMART errors?

MS, please dont dilute "device health" with absurd things like "Oooh, naughty! You are wasting power to run the backlight at 100%!" That belongs in a power management nag screen, not in device health.

But hey, What's a multibillion dollar giant like Microsoft gonna do, when the tablet and laptop makers start designing devices for "absolute minimal power draw" as the "intended use case" instead of "Hey, I need that screen bright enough  TO ACTUALLY FACKING READ GODDAMMIT!", and design their systems for power draw at those levels, meaning the battery really DOES die horribly from too high discharge rate---  No, rather than tell the manufacturers that "Marketing shennanigans are not worthy reasons to dilute important terms", MS just goes "Money!?!? OH! OKAY!".

I freaking hate marketers. They RUIN every goddamn thing.

Though, hey, Windows does now have the option for a "Fresh start." That's what they named it.

It lets you reinstall windows 10 on your machine, so all the shitty bloatware that comes with pre-built bullshit can be torn off and your personal data and information is retained.

...

Took them fucking long enough, if it works.

who the fuck ships a machine with McAfee? are they sadists?

Is it me, or does this sound like it could be a Metalocolypse song?

I mean, yea, the generic comes from somewhere, but shit, that generic is actually somebody's personality.

I helped Mother purchase a lap-top recently. That is, find one that could do what little was needed to a decent prize. Pre-baked, to minimize faff. (Confession: I always buy pre-baked computers these days. I am too thick to build them, and I am prepared to pay an awful lot for being able to say 'why, it is not my fault' if there is something wrong with it)

Too late, I noticed that it also came pre-tainted by McAfee; the original sin of computer souls. I doubt that it will be much of a problem, but nonetheless. I ought to have looked out for it. To compensate, I am composing a guide on how to avoid unneccessary Adobe exposure.

If you dont mind the teeny tiny internal storage, quite a few chromebooks can be totally reflashed, and can run windows natively instead.

Mine is currenting running linux though. :)  Linux is a better fit, IMO, because I stuck a big 128gb microSD card into the slot, and mounted it at /home, leaving the teeny 16gb internal storage just for OS stuff.

Just mount it with TRIM enabled, and have the inode size appropriate for the media, and it works a treat.

That is an idea, certainly. The laptop that I have (and use once in a blue moon when it is worth dragging it around with me) is about eleven years old, now. If I need a super-budget replacement, that would be one.

Composing, or consulting?

Composing, spreading the gospel that no one must be lashed to the bloated corpse of Flash nor Reader any more. We are free.

I will not have to live with it, of course, but if it is already branded and burned by McAfee and I simply do not wish any further unnecessary cruelty towards a blameless machine.

Flash games aren't entirely terrible, only partially so. Since I kind of grew up playing flash games, I don't really have anything against Flash.

McAfee Security Scam on the other hand... that's the sort of program that brings shame upon anything with "Mc" in its name.

Urist McAfee begins to stalk and brood...

As for Flash, the games and what-not that is made for it are quite alright. I, too, spent an awful lot of time with them. Indeed, there were a time before Youtube when great catalogues of popular Flash works were the place to be. Newgrounds was a particular haunt of mine, that is always the classic. Everything that a young man could want, back then.

Flash in and of itself, however, is just a bother. It wants the whole computer for itself. And then it want to let its worthless mongrel friends in by the backdoor in the dead of night, too. It is a shame that so many good things must depend on something so rubbish. But then again, modded Minecraft is likewise shackled to Java.
