Emoji Movie sounds like something where the characters communicate entirely in emojis, or all of the characters are emojis.

They are all Emojis.

What, like troll dolls?
My interest is piqued.

It is a good movie. I mean it isn't spectacular, it isn't going to wow anyone. But for what seemed like a SUPER DUPER marketing ploy movie where all the songs are real life songs... It is surprisingly not bad.

Those movies are always improved by racist pop culture charicatures which are decades out of date, like having a wise cracking black emoji who raps.

The closest to a racist charactiture in Trolls is probably that one of the trolls has a Rasta hat and dregs... but I don't get code Jamaican from him.

Didn't you watch the trailer? It was on the last page.

Did just now a min ago, and yeah, I swear the first scenes with the 'main character' is ripped straight out of Monsters Inc. Though it's not so ripped out that it's straight out plagarism, but possibly a homage?

Not a homage I'd say, but just a by the numbers production. It feels like a lot of those movies because they took something literally nobody gives a fuck about and made a whole movie about it. Naturally since there's no story behind emojis they patched together other stories to give it one.

e.g. Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Wreck it Ralph all have some pre-existing concepts behind them to hang a story hook on. And they all have a dichotomy they explore: New toys vs old toys, deconstructing childhood monsters: the line between scary and funny, and deconstructing the concept of hero/villain in video games (the villain is as important as the hero, basically).

But there's no story tension in emojis at all. An emoji expresses a feeling, and this movie asks what if that feeling wasn't that feeling? It's just dumb, because then it would be a different emoji.

I can't help thinking that the "meh" from the writers is a nod to the fact that the concept behind this movie isn't something people give a shit about. e.g. how many people list "emojis" as an interest and hook up on social media "oh wow I'm into emojis too we're so compatible!"

meh is your classic protag though.  A completely blank slate to placea story onto.  As meh, as an emotion, is more likely to passively allow a story to happen to him.  Meh is neutral, and meh is also like a lot of male protags who are, these days, kind of bumblers who are underexcited and impressed upon by more active personalities.

Take Ray Barone fromEvery Loves Raymond, or Al Bundy from ...  ...  Married with Children.
THAT kind of protag.  Comedy, lighthearted, easy to lead from plot to plot and project onto.  Disfunctional enough to allow plot to happen at all.

Meh is a good way to show progression too.  Meh is a weak character, that can be shown to grow into giving a fuck after a trial of will.  Thus, it is easy to make meh seem like he is doing something, when in reality, meh is merely absorbing the environment and reacting in a semi-realistic way.  meh is reactionary.

Too bad he is stuck in a movie about emojis.

Yes, parents everywhere will take their kids to see Emoji because it ... harks back to their own childhood. Actually I can't see why most parents would want to take their kids to see this. It's not like Lego movie with it's nostalgia.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling it'll get underwhelming box office results because they haven't thought out the dynamics of who is going to want to see this at the cinema.

Some little kids might enjoy it but they might not get what the whole emoji thing is about. For parents it's just the latest gimmicky thing, but not tied into anything their kids actually like. Are groups of teens likely to want to go watch this? They'd probably find it too childish. Are adult people with phones going to go watch this because they identify with emojis? Let's get real here.

How about The Toothpaste Movie, about all the half-squeezed tubes of toothpaste. To be honest I think you could get more people seeing that than Emoji Movie.

The worst part is probably the number of big names somehow attached to this thing.

Foodfight apparently had several big names attached to it as well, and it...

Didn't do well at all.

They should make a movie about emojis, where they all talk in emoji symbols. Would save a heck of a lot on voicecasting.

In its defense... It suffered from development hell. It would have been a BIT better, albeit still terrible, had that not occurred.

I handled some bookkeeping today. Whoever wrote it, wrote money values in the format of "22,20:-". 22 Euros, 20 cents, and no cents.

Foodfight never got a box office release. So it's not a good comparison. It was hyped for a 2003 release, then production issues meant it was delayed long-term, then the company went broke and all their assets were sold off, and a receivership company auctioned off the remains to another company who hastily packaged a DVD out of what footage existed. So it's not a fair movie comparison to something released as-intended in the cinema.

The A.V. Club stated that "...the grotesque ugliness of the animation alone would be a deal-breaker even if the film weren't also glaringly inappropriate in its sexuality, nightmare-inducing in its animation, and filled with Nazi overtones and iconography even more egregiously unfit for children than the script's wall-to-wall gauntlet of crude double entendres and weird intimations of inter-species sex"

Man I want to watch this now that I know it's an ugly cartoon about neo-Nazi breakfast cereals battling it out with inter-species porn.

But others do point out that everything feels unfinished about it. The offensive things don't necessarily make it a bad movie, per se. it was the rush to make a "film" less than a year after they got some half-finished scenes they got from a bankrupt production company. It's also hard to be exactly sure who to fault for the many flaws in the "movie", the original creators or the guys who patched together their unfinished prototype work and said "there, it's a movie now!"
