Well Furtuka it makes a LOT more sense when you sort of understand that cultures tend to have a lot of stereotypes heaped onto them that aren't necessarily true.

So I am very wary of these stereotypes because a LOT more often then not they end up being untrue.
You...can ask. :P We've an international community and even if some people are from neighboring countries, there's knowledge.

Furtaka to explain my surprise. My experience with Chinese, and Asian Culture in general, is fairly limited and usually confined to stereotypes.
I kinda had this answered before (I mean I remember Harry Baldman and a few others answering) but I'm real curious what people's stereotypes they've heard or easily recall of the Philippines and other countries here are. :P

Because with all the media here being more western (but still local and stuff--we always hear about America everyday though :V), I'm REAL CURIOUS ABOUT THE OPPOSITE SIDE.

Well yeah :P but do you know what it feels like to find out that everyone in Japan really does carry around a Katana? :P
I recall a documentary about us being 'knife culture' because many people on the streets--usually workers, carried a knife with them.
Y'know, because trade jobs and all. :D (But then it was about coconuts and such, in that very vague snippet in my memory)

Much as I regret to say it, most people around here seem to forget that the Philippines exist. Those that don't tend to picture the area as a more civilized and less corrupt banana republic, and thinks you all speak Spanish.

Totally what I'd like to know more about, actually. :3 Given how many times my country has its name misspelled too. :P

Also around here is-. . .?
And yes, we still do speak spanish (until it was removed from the curriculums so only the elders know how to speak fluent spanish, english, and even then--the latter isn't muchly spoken)

Well the problem with asking questions is questions themselves are racist :P

For example I would love to know the exact situation with Mexico's "Native Vs. Spanish" issues.

But the fact that I don't already know what they are means my question is offensive.

You...can kinda ask here. :P I mean it's obvious in your background history of posting that you don't even intend anything malicious even if the wording can (probably) really be off at times. It hasn't reached the 'really' degree yet, even.

And you can add a 'also please tell me if this sounds offensive' or adjust it to how you word it afterwards. It's not like the majority of people just assume offense and then react as if that assumption is a better conclusion than...talking to and with the other person. o_O

I'm in Northwest Ohio, by the big lakes you see in the North American continent if you look at a map.

Most people here (who even remember that your country is a thing) think that the ONLY language spoken over there is Spanish - at least 90% of people have never even heard of Tagalog/Filipino, let alone the other languages in the family.

I honestly thought up until now that Filipino just referred to the region's culture or to the region's people.

Didn't really know it also referred to the language.

Also, about the traditional Chinese shirt thing a page or two back: I'm busy imagining that as part of a three-piece business suit or something odd like that.

Being from Texas, I would say the area is fairly well known, but people don't tend to talk about it much. I think a lot of people still feel ashamed about the whole war crimes thing. Because it's never talked about, there's also a lot of people that don't really know much about it. I'm not entirely lucid right now, so I'm just gonna post this and fall asleep.

My grandfather (were he still alive) would confirm that human flesh tastes like pork. I remember hearing about that growing up.
...may I ask why he would know that?  Genuinely curious.
Dunno about misko's grandpa, but I have a similar story. My grandpa was a biologist, accompanying a cultural antropologist into the jungle of Guyana (forgot if it was French or British Guyana), back in the early '50s. They found a native tribe that practiced cannibalism. They were invited to eat with the tribe. Since they did not know if refusing would be an offense with the newly discovered natives, they politely ate some human stew. According to my grandpa it tasted like porc, but slightly sweeter.

I still have the native tribe chief's longbow, and curare tipped arrows (don't worry they are packed very safely in a glass bottle, no touchy touchy, curare stays potent for decades), which my grandpa traded for some western stuff. That bow is pretty awesome. I used to practice archery, but that thing was way beyond my pulling capacity. I'd estimate it to be a 70-80 pounder. According to my grandpa, the bow was longer than the tribe chief (a very short people they were). They used it to shoot monkeys from trees, holding the bow over their head. Those people must have had amazing strenght to pull that off.

Hence the insistence of eating human flesh, guaranteed to have all the nutrients necessary to keep a human healthy and strong.

You should ask the Brits here if prions are a myth. Well, the ones old enough to have experienced the 90's. Or maybe the 80's. Whenever it was that like 7/10 of all English folks died from it.
