Okay, you consider them all part of the same trap. You still happened to come across it and are within arm's reach of the lever.
What's the next move?

If you consider them part of the same trap... Then moving the Lever isn't murder, even slightly. You are changing the nature of the trap.

You just set the trap to murder one person instead of four. :P. It renders the example moot due to a simple categorical change.

Deotological and Utilitarian harmony.

Also dang Tack quiet your blood lust!

Did not read the tied down.

Alternative 3rd option-- Throw lever one way, then pull lever back again. This will cause train derailment. Possibility that all will perish, but also possibility that all will survive, depending on terrain, and prevailing conditions.

The usual setup for this mind game is that idiots are standing on the track loitering.  The odds of 1 person hearing the warning and getting off the track successfully are greater than those of 5 people all figuring it out in time. (herd paralysis is a thing with humans.) So, choosing to divert the train is proper.

In the case of "madman has tied them all down", choosing to derail the train by diverting, then leaning bodily into the switch to force the wheels off the track on the side of the switch, (tipping the train over, and making it jump the track-- easier than you think, a quarter on the track is sufficient leverage, which is why they tell you not to leave coins on them.) has a nonzero probablity of ideal solution, while strict adherence to a given outcome has a 0% chance.

The utilitarian response is STILL to attempt derailment.

Now can we move on to where that one person has the cure for cancer? Or where the four people are elderly women and the one person is a cancer researcher?

Or maybe where the one person is Hitler and the four people are Four Hitlers.

Or where someone is pointing a gun to your head and is forcing you to make this choice... Even though he has every ability to stop the train at anytime... And yet SOMEHOW you are responsible for this choice.

We just derailed the topic... Talking about Trains.

THE TROLLEY PROBLEM HAS NO BRAKES

Ohhh no the Trolley problem is out of control! Someone stop it!

Do we have any morbidly obese people in the forum? I heard it is the only thing that can stop Trolley problems.

Hehe, you're so right.
I want to spar again later, as... remote friends, I hope?  I consider you someone I (literally) remotely know and respect.

Also, your editing impulse/problem is even worse than mine.

I usually keep my edits within the window wherein they don't appear.  I have it by ear, don't know if it's 2 minutes or what.  Ha!

You can pull the lever, and it will kill 4 people.

If you don't, nobody dies, but people will keep talking about trolley problems.

He's not heavy enough to stop the derail. It continues unabated.

Fun fact: rules as written, two arithmetic errors can cause you to fail Maths 2 in the first four-five weeks of the course. No-one seems to know why this is.

The word "thicc" (or to really spell it correctly, t  h  i  c  c) is one of my favorite neologisms. I just realized that it is impossible to say it out loud, because it's a homophone of a word that means exactly the same thing in a broader context.

Which are it mean?
